2023 TOUR - MASTERS FINAL

Reporter: Dan Suh
Photographer: Andrew Phan

WHAT A FINAL! 16 of the best players from the London's Finest Pool 2023 Tour gathered last weekend to battle it out for the final top prize of the season.

With a few surprising results and long matches at the start of the day, there was already some fantastic match drama to kick us off. Imran Majid looked comfortable all day barely dropping any racks as he cruises through the winners side bracket.

On the other side of the winner's side table, Rico Diks makes a steady climb up the table battling through a tough field particularly a tough match against Gabriel who found some form but made 1 crucial error against Rico and lost out in the winner's semi-final on the hill.

Imran and Rico meet in the winner's side final where Imran claims the first win sending Rico to the loser's side bracket. Rico meets Gabriel again in the loser's side final where we have another tense match up.

Gabriel taking the lead looking like he's going to win it but once again, Rico shows resilience and experience to claim the win setting up a re-match with Imran. As we played true double elim, Rico would need to beat Imran twice to claim the win.

A late start to the final, both players have had a long day of tough matches and Rico draws first blood, comfortably getting the job done with an 8-4 win looking stronger than he's been all day. The 2nd round final Imran comes in full force, dominating with a 5-1 lead.

Rico starts to pull it back but it's not enough as Imran extends his lead to 7-3. It looks like it's all over as Imran is comfortably ahead on the hill. But with a few small errors, Rico gets his chances and claws back the scoreline to hill-hill.

Imran gets the break, makes a ball but hooks himself on the 2-ball. He takes his chances and goes for a jump shot. He misses, handing the table to Rico where he makes a flawless clearance to claim the title - our Masters Final champion 2023.

It was a cracking final between Rico and Imran - if you missed it, be sure to check out the live stream of matches on our Facebook page.

• Match 10: Shaw 5-1 Woodward
• Match 11: Shaw & Francisco Sanchez Ruiz 3-5 Woodward & Fedor Gorst

Heading into Friday night's action at an electric Alexandra Palace, the hosts and Mosconi Cup title holders boasted a commanding 7-1 lead - an all-time record-equaling advantage after day two.

The visitors surely had to hit the ground running in the opening tie of the night if they harboured any hopes of a colossal comeback; a doubles encounter featuring Jayson Shaw & David Alcaide against Skyler Woodward & Shane Wolford - the four cueists that didn’t play on Thursday.

But it was Team Europe who got away quickly. Shaw made his presence felt early on as he nailed a long bank on the 3-ball as the duo won the opening rack before break clearing in the second to double their lead. And, after two-time MVP winner Woodward miscued in rack three, the boys in blue soon found themselves 3-0 ahead.

The Stars and Stripes showed heart as they claimed the following two racks – punishing a missed 3-9 combo from Alcaide in rack five – but momentum soon shifted again as the Europeans compiled their second break run of the meeting before clearing up in rack seven to stamp the point after Cup rookie Wolford failed with a tricky pot on the 2-ball.

2023 Duelbits Mosconi Cup: Day Three Line-Ups

Hosts Team Europe are in complete control of the 30th anniversary Duelbits Mosconi Cup following the opening two days of play at the Alexandra Palace in North London.

The 2023 Duelbits Mosconi Cup is broadcast live on Sky Sports in the UK and Ireland, DAZN in the USA, Spain and Brazil, Viaplay in the Baltics and Scandinavia, and networks worldwide. For information on how to watch where you are, visit here.

The title holders – seeking a fourth consecutive crown – followed up their opening day clean sweep by collecting three of the four points on offer during Thursday night’s session to extend their lead to 7-1, and they now need only four more points to claim a 16th overall title. The six-point advantage is the joint-largest gap between the teams after day two in the competition’s history.

A crumb of hope finally arrived for Team USA in match seven when they broke their duck and got on the scoresheet through Shane Van Boening & Fedor Gorst with a doubles point, but the visitors face a monumental task to overhaul such a big deficit against the reigning champions.

Team Europe Extend Lead on Day Two of the 2023 Duelbits Mosconi Cup

Team Europe are marching towards a fourth consecutive Duelbits Mosconi Cup glory as the hosts extended their lead in the 30th anniversary of the transatlantic spectacle after winning day two at the Alexandra Palace.

Overall Score after Day Two: Team Europe 7-1 Team USA

• Match Five: Joshua Filler 5-2 Fedor Gorst
• Match Six: Francisco Sanchez Ruiz 5-4 Fedor Gorst
• Match Seven: Sanchez Ruiz & Filler 4-5 Shane Van Boening & Gorst
• Match Eight: Albin Ouschan 5-0 Tyler Styer

The title holders completed a clean sweep of victories during the opening session on Wednesday, and they continued their relentless pursuit of a 16th overall win in the competition by claiming three of the four points on offer throughout Thursday to move 7-1 up and just four points away from the target of 11.

Jeremy Jones’ USA outfit were desperate for a fast start, but things went from bad to worse for the visitors during the first half of the session.

Fresh from his swashbuckling whitewash singles win the night before, Joshua Filler was on singles duty once again to break off the action in North London. The 26-year-old – winner of his second MVP award last year – carried on from where he left off as he raced into a 4-0 lead against Fedor Gorst.

New USA acquisition Gorst avoided a bagel by taking rack five before threatening an unlikely comeback when making it 4-2. However, following a tactical duel in the seventh rack, he failed to escape from a snooker and Filler deposited a 2-9 combo to swell Europe’s advantage to five.

Gorst stayed out to play back-to-back singles matches – a bold move from captain Jones – where he faced current World Champion and World Nineball Tour No. 1 Francisco Sanchez Ruiz.

The Spaniard chalked up the opening frame, but Gorst managed to find a rhythm as he established leads of 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3; the first time that Team USA had reached the hill first in a fixture this year.

Sanchez Ruiz – despite looking edgy on occasions during the tie - managed to peg his opponent back again to force a deciding rack where it looked like Gorst would construct a break and run for Team USA’s first point. Under the intense pressure and expectation, though, the 23-year-old ran short of ideal position for the 7-ball and missed the subsequent pot to allow his opponent to step up and put the Europeans 6-0 ahead.

2023 Duelbits Mosconi Cup: Day Two Preview, Line-Ups and Reaction

Team USA will be aiming to mount a comeback on day two of the 30th anniversary Duelbits Mosconi Cup following a miserable opening session for the visitors which left them pointless and with plenty of work to do.

Hosts and title holders Team Europe swept the board on Wednesday night at the Alexandra Palace, claiming all four points on offer. It was the first time since 2013 – the 20th anniversary of this prestigious Trans-Atlantic extravaganza – that there has been an opening session whitewash.

Day One Reaction Both captains had their say after an eventful opening night in North London.

Ralph Eckert enjoyed a dream start to his debut as the European captain. Following a perfect opening night for the defending champions, the German said: “Even for me it is a little bit of a surprise but what can you do when you get early Christmas presents from Team America; thank you!”

For the first time in the history of the Mosconi Cup, Team Europe are fielding the same playing side for two successive editions. Eckert is pleased not to have had to change a winning combination: “Well, that was the idea when I saw that I have the chance to have the same team from last year. I’m the rookie, and I thought it’s a good idea to have a team together that already has a bond, and they already have the experience to win.”

In terms of how Eckert has stepped into his new role and developed his captaincy style, he said: “I’ve learned just by observing. It wasn’t so much today, but when we first met as a team. I observed I have so many totally different individuals, so in the beginning as a new trainer, you try to bring your own mark into the team, but I thought and recognised this would be a mistake, so I really let them do their things and really let them feel comfortable.”

Looking forward to day two and selecting his line-ups, Eckert added: “We stick with the plan, no need to change anything so far. I’m not afraid of our line-up, it’s the Americans’ turn to find some solution and get their best line-up.”

After a difficult start to his fourth consecutive Mosconi Cup campaign as the USA captain, Jeremy Jones said: “When you make mistakes, you expect to get punished; it certainly happened there.”

“I was glad to see some table time for some of the guys, I thought that was important. Skyler didn’t really get many shots against Filler; Filler put on an exhibition in that match. I thought the other matches were gettable.”

Captained by Ralph Eckert for the first time, the hosts and title holders – aiming to record a fourth consecutive Mosconi Cup triumph – completed the competition’s first opening session clean sweep since 2013. The first team to 11 points will lift the iconic trophy and pocket the lion’s share of the $360,000 total prize money.
