KO PING CHUNG PRODUCES FLAWLESS DISPLAY TO SET UP HUGE US OPEN FINAL WITH FEDOR GORST
Ko Ping Chung and Fedor Gorst will contest the 46th US Open Pool Championship final at Harrah's Resort, Atlantic City - live on Sky Sports in the United Kingdom & Ireland and DAZN in the United States - after a history making afternoon in New Jersey.
Appearing in his first-ever Matchroom major semi-final, Aleksa Pecelj took the moment in before walking into the arena. Opposite him stood Fedor Gorst, arriving to a rapturous ovation from the American crowd.
There was clear indication as to who the crowd were rooting for, but Pecelj was able to brush off and focus by establishing an early lead. The Serb brought out the spectacular, showcased with a fantastic full-table jump shot when hooked on the 1-ball to allow him to clean up the table. 1-0 down quickly became 5-1 and the 23-year-old looked to have established control.
But the man in the opposite corner was no ordinary player. 2019 World 9-ball champion Gorst has a plethora of experience, despite his young age. In taking the seventh rack following a scratch from Pecelj, the ‘Ghost’ could settle into the match and find his rhythm on the grey baize.
What followed was domination, as he clicked into gear. Across the next 11 racks, Gorst won 10 of them, as Pecelj could barely feature at the table. Even by his standards, this was an exceptional display by Gorst to see out an 11-6 victory and reach his maiden US Open Pool Championship final.
The same script wasn’t followed in the second semi-final, where Shark’s International Open winner Ko Ping Chung met 2021 US Open runner-up Aloysius Yapp. Despite a range of top-level experience across the globe, Chinese Taipei’s World Cup of Pool star Ko had never reached the final after losing out to Max Lechner hill-hill in last year’s semi-final.
He wasn’t in the mood to repeat history, producing one of the most dominant performances in the history of the World Nineball Tour. Yapp could only sit and admire as Ko dictated proceedings throughout barely giving the Singaporean a sniff.
Making the one in the side pocket, in every single rack, the Chinese Taipei star produced seven break and runs – more than the total number of shots Yapp had in the entire match. From 11 racks, Ko Ping Chung has pocketed all 108 balls in this race to 11. Yapp had zero. One of the most one-sided clinics you will ever see on the World Nineball Tour.
Match Schedule
Sunday 30th September – 4:30pm Eastern
Final – Fedor Gorst v Ko Ping Chung (TPE) – Race to 13)

FEDOR GORST DELIGHTS THE AMERICAN CROWD WITH LAST 16 WIN
Fedor Gorst reached his third-straight US Open Pool Championship quarter-final on the main TV table – live on Sky Sports in the UK & Ireland and DAZN in the United States – after battling past former US Open and World 9-ball Champion Carlo Biado.
Gorst, who recently won the Turning Stone Classic XXXVII during his preparations for the tournament, had ran up a three-rack lead to start the contest and looked comfortable in-front of an adopted home crowd in Atlantic City.
The Black Tiger Biado roared back taking the next three racks to level the game, in a trend that followed suit throughout as neither man could establish a comfortable margin until the 13th rack. Gorst found his breakthrough and got to the hill, and with the scores at 9-7 to the former Mosconi Cup winner, a moment of fortune saw him over the line.
Fortune favours the brave, and following a kick on the 5-ball, the six was knocked into the pocket allowing the 23-year-old to clean up and advance to the last eight.
Next up was the turn of Skyler Woodward to step onto the main stage in-front of a rapturous American crowd. In the opposite corner sat 2017 US Open champion Jayson Shaw, a man who’s made his home in the Land of Opportunity.
Shaw has been on top-form all week, and when he’s at the top of his game, Eagle Eye is an incredibly difficult opponent to stop. Woodward, who has years of experience against his British counterpart, found out the hard way and fell behind to a three-nil lead early doors.
The three-rack cushion was maintained as the scoreline bounced from 5-2 to 7-4 to 8-5 – where Shaw really came into control of the tie. His moment was capped off with a Golden Break and a signature war cry to let America know that he was here for the title.
Aloysius Yapp and Mario He contested for a spot in the last eight to open proceedings on Table 1. He has yet to snap off a Matchroom Major title, despite sitting #4 in the WNT Rankings. Yapp has been in this position before, having reached the US Open final in 2021, and was able to use the experience of the event to see out a 10-5 victory over the Panda.
Sharks’ International Open winner Ko Ping Chung stung the hands of Mosconi Cup hopeful and Matchroom Major veteran Joshua Filler. The World Cup star of Chinese Taipei dashed the hopes of another major title for the German.
The session came to a close with a hill-hill epic between Wiktor Zielinski and European Open champion David Alcaide. Having commanded a dominant 7-1 margin, Zielinski looked set to cleanly move into the quarter-finals.
But El Matador Alcaide is a fighter, and battled back to take the tie the distance, and was breaking in the deciding rack. It ended in agony for the Spaniard however, scratching on the break to allow the Pole ball-in-hand and was able to clean up for the win.
Meanwhile on Table 2, Serbia’ Aleksa Pecelj reached his first Matchroom Major quarter-final since the 2022 UK Open Pool Championship. Having shown his relief yesterday from battling through the loser’s qualification, he truly looked in his element on the big stage, running a six-pack on the way to a 10-1 thrashing of legendary veteran Ralf Souquet.
Hong Kong’s Robbie Capito and Poland’s Daniel Maciol went head-to-head for a chance of their first-ever Matchroom Major quarter-final. After a dominant start to proceedings, Capito held off a resurgent charge from the Pole to make the final eight.
Max Lechner, runner-up to Francisco Sanchez Ruiz in last year’s US Open final, completed the session’s play on Table 2 with a dominant 10-3 display over Portugal’s Miguel Silva.
FINAL 8 CONFIRMED
• Fedor Gorst, • Aloysius Yapp, • Aleksa Pecelj, • Jayson Shaw, • Ko Ping Chung, • Robbie Capito, • Wiktor Zielinski, • Max Lechner

16 REMAIN IN US OPEN AS DEFENDING CHAMPION CRASHES OUT
Defending US Open Pool champion Francisco Sanchez Ruiz has been knocked out of the tournament by Poland's Daniel Maciol at Harrah's Resort, Atlantic City - live on DAZN in the United States and broadcasters around the world.
Having edged past the Great Dane Mickey Krause thanks to a fluke at hill-hill, it looked like FSR's luck was in, however the World Champion and current WNT #1 faced a buoyant Maciol, who inflicted a gigantic performance for a 10-5 victory and a place in the last 16.
Five-time US Open champion and pre-tournament bookies favourite Shane Van Boening was beaten on the main table in front of an adoring home crowd, with Chinese Taipei's Chang Jung-Lin recording a 10-7 win over the South Dakota Kid.
That left the hopes of the US on the shoulders of Skyler Woodward, the sole remaining American in the competition. Having trailed the dangerous Japanese star Naoyuki Oi 6-3, the crowd roared as Sky overturned the scoreline for a 10-7 with six consecutive racks.
Ralf Souquet continued to roll back the years on the outside tables. Two-time World Champion Albin Ouschan fell victim to the Kaiser, a comprehensive 10-5 victory before the same scoreline followed against Chris Reinhold to see the veteran German into the last 16.

Ko Ping Chung was the first name through to the last 16 after beating Filipino Jeff De Luna 10-3 on the main table. Brother Ko Pin Yi, the current World Pool Masters winner, couldn't follow suit, heading home at the hands of Phuong Nam Pham in the last 64. The Vietnamese himself then beaten by Aleksa Pecelj, who matches his deepest run at a Matchroom major event following a last 16 run at the 2023 World Pool Championship.
European Open champion David Alcaide booked his place in Friday's action with a dominant 10-3 display over Peruvian Gerson Martinez Boza, with eyes fully focussed on the next automatic spot for Team Europe at the Mosconi Cup - which will be announced following the conclusion of the US Open World Championship.
Jayson Shaw, Joshua Filler, Fedor Gorst, Mario He, Wiktor Zielinski and Max Lechner will be following Alcaide's mission of the Mosconi, with all featuring in a strong European contingent battling out across the Atlantic.
FINAL 16 CONFIRMED
• Fedor Gorst, • Carlo Biado, • Mario He, • Aloysius Yapp, • Ralf Souquet, • Aleksa Pecelj, • Jayson Shaw, • Skyler Woodward, • Joshua Filler, • Ko Ping Chung, • Daniel Maciol, • Robbie Capito, • David Alcaide, • Wiktor Zielinski, • Max Lechner,• Miguel Silva

JAYSON SHAW AND EARL STRICKLAND SET TO RENEW RIVALRY IN LAST 64 BLOCKBUSTER
Five-time US Open Champion Earl Strickland and 2017 winner Jayson Shaw will renew their rivalry in the last 64 of the US Open Pool Championship.
Eagle Eye Shaw, who previously lived with Strickland when first moving to the United States, had clashed with Strickland after a bust-up at a Straight Pool tournament in New York.
If the 2022 Mosconi Cup press conference is anything to go by, fans can expect fireworks as two of the game's most charismatic characters collide on the big stage - streamed live on DAZN in the United States.
Following defeat to veteran Ralf Souquet on Tuesday, the Pearl battled through Loser's Qualification with victories over Nguyen Thang and Toh Lian Han to book a spot in the last 64, proving his ability to maintain at the top 39 years after first US Open success.
Other Headlines
Five-time US Open Pool Champion Shane Van Boening avoided an early scare to reach the last 64 through the double-elimination format. Marco Teutscher, who was scarily involved in a high-speed car accident earlier in the week, brushed off the aches and pains to overcome SVB on the outside tables.
Teutscher has been awarded with an all-European affair with Ukraine's Vitaliy Patsura, whilst former World Pool Championship runner-up Chang Jung-Lin has the unenviable task of facing Van Boening in-front of an adoring home crowd.
Defending champion Francisco Sanchez Ruiz defeated young-Dane Mickey Krause 9-2 in Winners' Qualification - a fixture set to be repeated in Thursday's schedule.
With a wide-range of European's vying to secure the next automatic spot in the Mosconi Cup, attention will be Niels Feijen and Mario He who will battle out for a spot in the last 32. 'The Panda' He, currently #4 in the World Nineball Tour Rankings, is yet to feature at the trans-atlantic feature event and can put his name firmly into contention with a deep run in Atlantic City.
In the final match of Tuesday's play, Tyler Styer avoided a late comeback from former European Open semi-finalist Jose Alberto Delgado to hold on for a 9-7 victory on the tv table. Team USA's Mosconi Cup hopeful will face Sanjin Pehlivanovic in the last 64 - the player to knock him into the loser's bracket - in a fascinating rematch.

STRICKLAND & SOUQUET DELIGHT PACKED AMERICAN CROWD
Ralf Souquet and Earl Strickland rolled back the years to produce a hill-hill classic at the US Open Pool Championship - live on the main streaming table on DAZN.
'The Kaiser' Souquet ran a five-rack lead on 'the Pearl' to assert dominance early in the tie - a display of the form showcased at each Matchroom event so far in 2023. Trading blows in the rounds to follow, a packed crowd around table one were treated to a vintage Earl Strickland performance, who came back to ultimately force a deciding rack with a brilliant 2-9 combo.
Six-time World Pool Master Souquet has reached Winners' Qualification at every Matchroom Major so far this campaign, and kept tradition with victory over five-time US Open champion Strickland in a brilliant contest.
With double-elimination in effect in Atlantic City, Strickland's victory over Leo C. Ott sees him return to the table on Wednesday in a quest to reach the single-elimination knockouts.
European Open runner-up Anton Raga arrived in New Jersey as one of the tournament favourites after a remarkable run in Fulda, Germany. Spaniard Manuel Montejo Fernández, previously unranked on the World Nineball Tour rankings, stunned the Filipino star in-front of the on-watching WNT ranked No.1 and defending US Open champion Francisco Sanchez Ruiz.
Skyler Woodward - showcasing his all-new Cuetec AVID Proof Series of cues - was a comfortable 9-2 victor over both American opponents in Charles Carlisle and Robert Czupryniak. Alex Pagulayan awaits in the third round.
Fresh from hosting the CueLee's Connecticut 9-ball Open - the latest WNT Ranking Event - Eagle Eye Jayson Shaw's full attention turned to the US Open Pool Championship with comfortable wins in both matches.
Darren Appleton and Niels Feijen continued the trend of strong veteran performances to seal their spots in the next round - setting up a mouthwatering clash against one another.
On the outer tables as play wrapped up, drama ensued in the all-American clash between Scott Frost and Hunter Lombardo. At hill-hill, Lombardo accused Frost of touching the 6-ball with his shirt. Eventually with ball-in-hand, Lombardo ran out to win 9-8.

SANCHEZ RUIZ’S TITLE DEFENCE BEGINS IN ATLANTIC CITY
WNT Ranked No.1, World Pool champion and defending US Open holder Francisco Sanchez Ruiz overcame both opponents on day one in Atlantic City – live on DAZN to fans in the United States.
The Spaniard, who overcame a bout of Kidney Stones ahead of the trip to the United States, showed no sign of ring rust with an impressive 9-1 display against Jon Weber to open the day on the streaming table.
Max Watanbe awaited in the next round, but he followed fellow-countryman in falling victim to the Spanish superstar – a 9-2 win for El Ferrari which saw him through to Winners’ Qual.
European hopefuls followed FSR into the winners’ bracket, with Polish trio Konrad Juszczyszyn, Wojciech Szewczyk and Mieszko Fortunski booking their place in Wednesday’s action.
Cuelees Connecticut 9-ball Open winner Moritz Neuhausen continued his form in the States – after being taken to the limit by Jesse Engel hill-hill on the streaming table.
Tyler Styer will be targeting a deep run this week in hopes of securing the next automatic Mosconi Cup place for Team USA – which will be announced following the results of the US Open Pool Championship. Finishing with a Golden Break against Vietnam’s Luong Duc Thien, a tasty encounter with Sanjin Pehlivanovic awaits.
2002 US Open champion Corey Deuel delighted American hearts on the main table with a phenomenal 9-6 victory over Sharks International Open champion Ko Ping Chung.

2023 TOUR - 8-Ball Autumn Open
Reporter: Dan Suh
Photographer: Andrew Phan
Last week, the 8-Ball Autumn Open brought 32 players to the table to battle it over for a top prize of £500 and a space in Masters Final at the end of the year.
The groups stage was tough to call with heavy hitters spread all across the field. 8-Ball was always going to a challenge for the 9-Ball players - different tactics, different patterns - enough to catch out those who don't practice 8-Ball.
A few surprising results in the group stages. Imran struggled to get going and found himself 4-2 down in his first match but still managed to claw his way back to a 5-4 win and eventually winning the group. Chris Seville had a couple of shaky moments in his first 2 group matches but still managed to win the group on points.
Ali Merchant looked like he had given up entirely after his 2nd group match then won his last match 5-0 but unfortunately it just wasn't enough to qualify for the last 16. Marius looked was definitely ready for this comp as he breezed through his group casually with 5-1, 5-3 and 5-0 wins.
Daniel Baker returns to the American baize after a long break from the game showing he's still a powerhouse, easily winning his group with 3 wins.
Down to the Last 16, straight knock-out and it tells a very different story. Imran has a repeat of his first group match going 5-2 down to Ramon but somehow still managed to battle his way back to make it through to the quarters. There however, he meets in form Ali, converted snooker player, where the 2 go toe to toe all the way to hill-hill but Ali holds his nerve and makes a beautiful clearance to claim the win.
Gareth 'Darkside' Esprit makes steady progress through the Summer Open winner Anthony Ginn with a 7-6 win. And Gabriel shows his continued consistency as he always makes it to the business end of tournaments.
Meanwhile, Spencer who had a very shaky start in the groups finds some form to take out Daniel Baker, then goes from strength to strength to take out a pre-tournament favourite Rod and Ali to make his way to the final. There he met Oliver Lawrence, a young player with a long history with English pool but recently picking up American Pool. After winning his group, he didn't look like stopping from there as he comfortably takes out his dad Alex Lawrence, Chris Seville and Gabriel to book his place in the final where he just looked confident and comfortable eventually walking away the champion at the end of a long day with a 7-4 win.
It was a fantastic tournament and a great pleasure to welcome 32 of the finest players to play. There's 1 more tournament left of the 2023 Tour - the Multi-Ball Winter Open on Sunday 12th November - get your entries in now to avoid disappointment and for that 1 last chance to qualify for the Masters Final in December.

And lastly, a MASSIVE thank you to our sponsors who helped make these tournaments happen.

Fisher defeated Chieh-Yu Chou in 2 sets to claim her second consecutive Michigan Open victory.
The final day in Battle Creek, Michigan couldn’t have been more exciting, with women’s Final 4 showcasing an outstanding level of play.
The opening semifinal faced-off Chinese Taipei stars Chieh-Yu Chou and Tzu-Chien Wei. Reigning world 9-Ball and 10-Ball champion Chou took the opening set 4-2. Wei Wei, last year’s Michigan Open runner-up, played flawlessly in the beginning of the second set, but made a couple of unforced errors to go on the hill. Chou capitalized on Wei’s miss on the 9-Ball to steal the second set 4-3 and advance to the final.
Remarkable performance from Chihiro Kawahara, the tournament's underdog, who reached the semifinals without dropping a match. until she encountered defending champion Kelly Fisher. Kawahara, who was 3-2 up in the first set, assisted to a carom masterclass by Fisher making 2 unbelievable early 10-balls that turn around the score. Fisher ended up winning the crucial first set 4-3. The second set was full of safeties from Fisher and stunning escapes from Kawahara. One of them, an incredible 2-rail kick shot, could easily be the shot of the tournament. Kawahara tied the match winning the second set 4-2 but couldn’t hold Fisher in the third set (4-2).

ZIELINSKI TRIUMPHS AS 2023 MICHIGAN OPEN CHAMPION

Aloysius Yapp appeared virtually unbeatable in Battle Creek. When he orchestrated a comeback from being one set down against Gorst in the semifinal, the enticing chance at a third win in a row in Michigan seemed well within reach. Only one polish player could stop his dream: Wiktor Zieliński.
Despite facing recent struggles, Zieliński exhibited exceptional form throughout the tournament. In the first semifinal, he launched like a juggernaut, executing three break-and-runs in the initial set to secure a remarkable 4-0 victory in just 20 minutes. His compatriot, Fortunski, although starting off strong in the second set, bore witness to a game-changing moment when Zielinski executed a remarkable kick-shot on the two ball, decisively shifting the momentum in his favor.
