2023 TOUR - 8-Ball Autumn Open
Reporter: Dan Suh

Last week, the 8-Ball Autumn Open brought 32 players to the table to battle it over for a top prize of £500 and a space in Masters Final at the end of the year.
The groups stage was tough to call with heavy hitters spread all across the field. 8-Ball was always going to a challenge for the 9-Ball players - different tactics, different patterns - enough to catch out those who don't practice 8-Ball.
A few surprising results in the group stages. Imran struggled to get going and found himself 4-2 down in his first match but still managed to claw his way back to a 5-4 win and eventually winning the group. Chris Seville had a couple of shaky moments in his first 2 group matches but still managed to win the group on points.
Ali Merchant looked like he had given up entirely after his 2nd group match then won his last match 5-0 but unfortunately it just wasn't enough to qualify for the last 16. Marius looked was definitely ready for this comp as he breezed through his group casually with 5-1, 5-3 and 5-0 wins.
Daniel Baker returns to the American baize after a long break from the game showing he's still a powerhouse, easily winning his group with 3 wins.
Down to the Last 16, straight knock-out and it tells a very different story. Imran has a repeat of his first group match going 5-2 down to Ramon but somehow still managed to battle his way back to make it through to the quarters. There however, he meets in form Ali, converted snooker player, where the 2 go toe to toe all the way to hill-hill but Ali holds his nerve and makes a beautiful clearance to claim the win.
Gareth 'Darkside' Esprit makes steady progress through the Summer Open winner Anthony Ginn with a 7-6 win. And Gabriel shows his continued consistency as he always makes it to the business end of tournaments.
Meanwhile, Spencer who had a very shaky start in the groups finds some form to take out Daniel Baker, then goes from strength to strength to take out a pre-tournament favourite Rod and Ali to make his way to the final. There he met Oliver Lawrence, a young player with a long history with English pool but recently picking up American Pool. After winning his group, he didn't look like stopping from there as he comfortably takes out his dad Alex Lawrence, Chris Seville and Gabriel to book his place in the final where he just looked confident and comfortable eventually walking away the champion at the end of a long day with a 7-4 win.
It was a fantastic tournament and a great pleasure to welcome 32 of the finest players to play. There's 1 more tournament left of the 2023 Tour - the Multi-Ball Winter Open on Sunday 12th November - get your entries in now to avoid disappointment and for that 1 last chance to qualify for the Masters Final in December.
Be sure to check out the live streams from this event and previous events on our Facebook page.
And lastly, a MASSIVE thank you to our sponsors who helped make these tournaments happen.

KELLY FISHER DEFENDS THE TITLE
Reporter: Predator Group
Photography: Predator Group
Fisher defeated Chieh-Yu Chou in 2 sets to claim her second consecutive Michigan Open victory.
The final day in Battle Creek, Michigan couldn’t have been more exciting, with women’s Final 4 showcasing an outstanding level of play.
The opening semifinal faced-off Chinese Taipei stars Chieh-Yu Chou and Tzu-Chien Wei. Reigning world 9-Ball and 10-Ball champion Chou took the opening set 4-2. Wei Wei, last year’s Michigan Open runner-up, played flawlessly in the beginning of the second set, but made a couple of unforced errors to go on the hill. Chou capitalized on Wei’s miss on the 9-Ball to steal the second set 4-3 and advance to the final.
Remarkable performance from Chihiro Kawahara, the tournament's underdog, who reached the semifinals without dropping a match. until she encountered defending champion Kelly Fisher. Kawahara, who was 3-2 up in the first set, assisted to a carom masterclass by Fisher making 2 unbelievable early 10-balls that turn around the score. Fisher ended up winning the crucial first set 4-3. The second set was full of safeties from Fisher and stunning escapes from Kawahara. One of them, an incredible 2-rail kick shot, could easily be the shot of the tournament. Kawahara tied the match winning the second set 4-2 but couldn’t hold Fisher in the third set (4-2).

ZIELINSKI TRIUMPHS AS 2023 MICHIGAN OPEN CHAMPION
Reporter: Predator Group

Aloysius Yapp appeared virtually unbeatable in Battle Creek. When he orchestrated a comeback from being one set down against Gorst in the semifinal, the enticing chance at a third win in a row in Michigan seemed well within reach. Only one polish player could stop his dream: Wiktor Zieliński.
Despite facing recent struggles, Zieliński exhibited exceptional form throughout the tournament. In the first semifinal, he launched like a juggernaut, executing three break-and-runs in the initial set to secure a remarkable 4-0 victory in just 20 minutes. His compatriot, Fortunski, although starting off strong in the second set, bore witness to a game-changing moment when Zielinski executed a remarkable kick-shot on the two ball, decisively shifting the momentum in his favor.

BIADO & FEIJEN STORM TO RANKING EVENT SUCCESSES
Carlo Biado and Niels Feijen both had a weekend to remember on opposite sides of the Atlantic, picking up World Nineball Tour Ranking Event victories in the United States and Serbia respectively.
LATEST WORLD NINEBALL TOUR RANKINGS
RAXX POOL ROOM OPEN
2021 US Open Pool champion Biado made the perfect preparation for a return to Harrah’s Resort, Atlantic City, for the 46th instalment of pool’s most historic major from September 25-30th live on Sky Sports in the UK & Ireland and DAZN in the USA, by landing the Raxx Pool Room Open in a hill-hill thriller with Germany’s World Cup of Pool finalist Mortiz Neuhausen.
The Black Tiger was the cream of a strong 126-man field in West Hempstead, New York, having beaten the likes of European Open champion David Alcaide, former World Pool Master Alex Kazakis and 2022 US Open Pool Championship finalist Max Lechner en-route to the final.
19-year-old prodigy Neuhausen had showcased his qualities throughout the tournament, having sent Biado to the loser’s bracket in a commanding 9-4 display earlier in the tournament. Victories over Kazakis and former World Champion Fedor Gorst project the German’s ability to thrive at the top of the game for many years to come.
LONGONI LOZNICA OPEN
Niels Feijen’s quest for a 15th appearance at the Mosconi Cup were enhanced after landing the $3,000 first prize in Loznica, Serbia. The veteran Dutchman flexed his superiority on the Nineball Balkan Tour, remaining unbeaten throughout to defeat Serbian Luka Bulatovic 9-5 in the final.
Victory for Feijen strengthens his position inside the top 16 of the WNT Rankings, who will be targeting a deep run to the latter stages of the US Open, where two more players will secure their places in Team Europe and USA at the 30th Anniversary Mosconi Cup taking place at Alexandra Palace, London from December 6-9th 2023.
The competition couldn’t have been hotter in Central Europe, with all four quarter-finals matches going hill-hill, seeing World Cup of Pool stars Sanjin Pehlivanovic and Aleksa Pecelj eliminated by Faruk Terzic and Bulatovic respectively.
JS Junior Open champion 13-year-old Maks Benko continued a stellar year with a run to the semi-finals – losing out to eventual champion Feijen.

WORLD 8-BALL MEN’S CHAMPION TO EARN $75,000
Reporter: Predator Group
Photography: Predator Group
The 2023 Predator WPA World 8-Ball Men’s Championship will pay its champion $75,000, the highest winner’s prize in tournament pool.
That marks an increase from the $60,000 earned by defending champion Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz when he took the title home from Puerto Rico last year.
The 2023 Predator WPA World 8-Ball Men’s Championship will take place this October 17-22 at Sportpark Klagenfurt in Austria, which will also be hosting the Predator WPA World 10-Ball Women’s Championship (October 18-22) and the Predator WPA World 10-Ball Junior Championships (October 19-22).
The 96-player invited field for the Predator WPA World 8-Ball Men’s Championship will be competing for a total prize fund of $250,000. A race-to-8 double elimination bracket will reduce the field to 32 players who will then face single elimination to determine the champion.
The Predator Pro Billiard Series, working alongside Richwert promotions, returns to the picturesque city of Klagenfurt, home of the Jasmin Ouschan Billiard Academy, for the third time but this year marks the first staging of the Predator WPA World 8-Ball Men’s Championship in the country.
Sanchez-Ruiz will be one of the favorites as he aims to defend his title but 2022 semi-finalist Mario He will be in his home country, while Albin Ouschan will have home-town support at Sportpark Klagenfurt, the base of his sister’s Jasmin Ouschan Billiard Academy.
This will be the ninth staging of the men’s World 8-Ball Championship. It had previously been played in Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates before being revived from a ten-year hiatus in Puerto Rico last year.

FEDOR GORST IN POLE POSITION FOR MOSCONI CUP
Fedor Gorst snapped off the Turning Stone Classic XXXVII at Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, NY moving him into the next Mosconi Cup automatic qualification spot for Team Europe via the World Nineball Tour Rankings.
The $10,000 top prize for beating Mika Immonen 13-10 in a high-strung final sees him overtake European Open Pool Championship winner David Alcaide into second place in Team Europe’s standings.
With the next automatic cut-off for qualification coming after the US Open Pool Championship, a strong run at the Barry Behrman trophy could see the former World Pool Champion sew-up his spot in the trans-atlantic tussle at Alexandra Palace, from December 6-9th in London, live on Sky Sports in the UK and Ireland and DAZN in the United States.
In his third-appearance at the Turning Stone Classic, Gorst fought through an impressive 128-man field to lift his first title. Former World Cup of Pool winner Lee Van Corteza was beaten in a hill-hill epic, before sweeping aside Thorsten Hohmann 9-2 in the semi-final. Having lost to Immonen in the hot-seat match, revenge was sweet for the Ghost in the final.
Immonen had been the form-man of the tournament, with victories over two-time World Pool Champion Hohmann and seven-time Turning Stone Classic victor Jayson Shaw.
Hunter Lombardo and recent Bob Stocks Memorial 9 Ball winner BJ Ussery strengthened their Mosconi Cup hopes for Team USA. Connecticut-born Jeremy Sossei entered the fray with an impressive finish in fourth place.

DAVID ALCAIDE IS 2023 EUROPEAN OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP WINNER
David Alcaide has won the 2023 European Open Pool Championship at Hotel Esperanto, Fulda, Germany beating Anton Raga in the final in a thrilling hill hill finish live on Sky Sports in the UK, Tap GO in the Philippines, Sport 1 in Germany, DAZN in the USA, and networks worldwide from 6 pm local time. (CEST).
David Alcaide 13-12 Anton Raga
In a match-up of experience and youth, it was the latter who took the opener as Raga pounced on a loose position from Alcaide on the seven that left him chasing the nine from trying to make the eight. A dry break from Raga in the second rack allowed Alcaide in for the run out and it was 1-1. Nothing could separate the pair early doors as they went toe to toe for 2-2, 3-3, and 4-4.
There was a familiar tale throughout as Alcaide pulled ahead once again at 5-4 after a dry break from Raga put him to the table. In the tenth, Alcaide had a dry break of his own and soon it was square again at 5-5. Both players were struggling with the break and a scratch from Raga led Alcaide back in to bring up a 6-5 lead through a 4-9 combo. Neither could shake each other's efforts off and a skewiff shape on the nine from Alcaide left the ball hanging and it was 6-6.
SCORES / BRACKET
Raga made the first break toward the finish line with back-to-back runouts to go 8-6 up. An errant effort on the two from Raga in the 15th rack was all it took Alcaide to cut the deficit to one at 8-7. A confident break and run levelled up at 8-8 and a race to five was on. The 4-9 was on for Alcaide again in the following rack and the Spaniard took charge for 9-8.
Alcaide closed in on the finishing line with another brilliant rack in the 18th to reach double digits first. The experience of Alcaide was starting to shine through with the two-time World Pool Masters champion two away from victory with another break and run for 11-8, it was five racks on the spin. Raga stole the 20th rack and then the following before a tricky break-and-run road map put Raga one behind El Matador 11-10.

ANTON RAGA AND DAVID ALCAIDE TO CONTEST 2023 EUROPEAN OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
Anton Raga and David Alcaide will contest the 2023 European Open Pool Championship final in Fulda, Germany live on Sky Sports in the UK, Tap GO in the Philippines, Sport 1 in Germany, DAZN in the USA, and networks worldwide from 6pm local time. (CEST).
Joshua Filler 9-11 Anton Raga
Shane Van Boening 7-11 David Alcaide
Home favourite Joshua Filler took on Raga in what promised to be an epic battle and it didn't disappoint. Filler buoyed by the home crowd made the quicker start to lead at the first commercial break 3-0 before Raga took the fourth from him to get on the scoreboard for the first time. In the sixth rack at 3-2 up, Filler looked to be in muddy waters with the cue ball tucked behind the nine when going for the seven but that didn't deter him as the German made a 7-8 combo to establish a two-rack lead again.
LIVE SCORES / BRACKET
Filler knew a deep run would aide his Mosconi Cup automatic selection hopes with the 2022 Cuetec MVP taking further control at 6-2 to be over the halfway mark for the 11 for victory. A carom on the nine from Raga in the 11th rack proved vital towards the comeback trail to be one behind at 6-5. Raga still knew he was up against it with the sold-out crowd craving a Filler win but he was undeterred as he got on level terms for the first time for 6-6 and then 7-7.
Despite Filler's early flow, Raga was proving tough to shake off and the Filipino, making his maiden Matchroom major berth, was there to upset the apple cart taking a 9-7 lead to be two from victory. Raga reached the hill first at 10-9 and a run out from the Dragon secured a memorable victory that sees him take on the biggest challenge of his career tonight in Alcaide.
