European Open 2023

The IPA professional pool tour returns for 2023 with the first of five events, starting off at Newcastle at the ever-popular Gosforth Park Hotel with the European Open from March 31dt though to conclusion on Sunday the 2nd of April, with free entry for spectators from start to finish.

250 players have eagerly entered with the Open, Amateur, Professional, and Ladies events up for grabs and plenty of money to win – though make no mistake, it will need to be earned in this field, and with 22 tables in constant use it’s going to be fast, furious – and noisy.

Newly crowned World Champion Clint I’Anson will be looking to build on his outstanding form, but can he shake off the champions curse which has seen the champs struggle the following season with everyone gunning for the main man, or will Marc Farnsworth bounce back and cement his place as rankings number one? Nothing is ever as simple as it looks, and in a sport growing exponentially throughout the UK and elsewhere, it would come as no great shock to see an alternative name on the first trophy of 2023.

With the C4 Sports YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuBUop_kfoY) covering the events live from 3pm Friday and 12pm Saturday and Sunday, and various bookmakers offering odds, this is my chance to take a guess at the main contenders – read on or make your own minds up, either way we are in for a festival of pool regardless...

Francisco Sanchez Ruiz Claims Premier League Pool Title

Francisco Sanchez Ruiz has won the 2023 Premier League Pool title beating Jayson Shaw in the final 7-4 at the Morningside Arena, Leicester, England live on Matchroom.Live, Viaplay, and networks worldwide.

Final Table

Sanchez Ruiz reached his fourth final in the last five Matchroom individual tournaments and did so by finishing top of the league by four points with a record 22 points overall before meeting Naoyuki Oi in the semi-finals. Oi maintained his spot in the top six for most of the week going into the final day and made sure of his spot late on with a 5-3 win over Shaw. A year back, Oi missed out on the final four by rack difference but on this occasion, the tables turned as Sushi Boom made it on the number by racks won. When it came to the semi-final, Sanchez Ruiz slayed Oi 7-3 at a canter to set up a tantalising final with either Sanjin Pehlivanovic or Shaw.

Pehlivanovic had led for large parts of this week but fell off the pace over the weekend, but held it together on the final day to face a tough semi-final with Shaw. Shaw meanwhile has played with freedom all week and hadn't looked too fazed with the job at hand. The Brit lost the opening rack but came good from there to leave Pehlivanovic trailing in his wake at 6-3 before wrapping up victory at 7-4.

Konrad Juszczyszyn's faint hopes of making the final four were ended abruptly in the afternoon whilst Alex Pagulayan missed out on the final spot by the margin of racks won to Oi. Pagulayan needed a heavy Oi defeat late on and at least register his own win. Pagulayan got the win but the heavy loss he needed Juszczyszyn to inflict on Oi along with Shaw beating him was not forthcoming for Sushi Boom.

Kaci Catches Sanchez Ruiz to Win World 10-Ball Championship

Things had not been going well for Eklent Kaci in the finals of the WPA World 10-Ball Championship.

He had watched opponent Francisco Sanchez Ruiz jump out to an early 5-1 advantage and had not really seen much time at the table other than a dry break and a couple of missed kick shots. Regardless, the Albanian sat quietly and just had a feeling his time would come.

“I didn’t do anything wrong,” said Kaci. “I actually made a few nice kicks. I’m like, ‘just keep on playing.’ I’m trying to stay focused because it’s a world final and you don’t get in this position too often. I was just waiting my chances.”

And when he got his chance, Kaci kicked the door open with both feet, winning nine of the last 11 games to win his second World 10-Ball Championship Saturday evening at the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The win not only gives Kaci another world 10-ball championship but also denied Sanchez Ruiz the opportunity to be the first player in history to hold world titles in 8-ball, 9-ball and 10-ball simultaneously.

“I cannot say that I feel bad because I had an unbelievable week,” said Sanchez Ruiz. “I played really good under pressure but in the final, I made a mistake and he played really well. His safety game is unbelievable and he deserved to win. But I am really happy with my performance here this week.”

Wiktor Victorious Again at Alfa Las Vegas Open

Reporter: Predator Group

Heading into this year’s Alfa Las Vegas Open, Wiktor Zielinski said the fact that he won last year’s event wasn’t even registering in his mind.

“To be honest, I didn’t even think about it,” said the 22-year-old from Poland. “I just wanted to play my best and see what happened.”

What happened was he took opportunities when they arrived and battled through tough layouts and breaking woes when they didn’t, as Zielinski won his second consecutive Alfa Las Vegas Open, defeating Sanjin Pehlivanovic in straight sets in the finals Sunday at the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Zielinski, who picked up $25,000 for the victory, needed to survive a shootout against Duong Quoc Hoang in the semifinals to reach the finals and repeat as champion.

“I wanted so bad to win this one,” said the Pole. “Hopefully, I showed my best game.”

He certainly showed perseverance, battling back from a lack of open shots in crucial situations.

After splitting the first two games of the opening set of the semifinals, Hoang reclaimed the lead with a break-and-run but allowed Zielinski to tie the match when he missed the 1 ball. The 36-year-old from Vietnam reclaimed the lead with a one rail kick in on the one ball and had a chance to increase his lead but misplayed position on the 4 ball then left an opening on a safety attempt. The Pole tied the match, then took his first lead of the set after his opponent fouled but Hoang evened the score again when his opponent missed a jump shot on the 3 ball in the following rack. The Pole recovered and sealed the first set victory when he won a safety exchange in the deciding game, 4-3.

JAYSON SHAW JUNIOR OPEN TO TAKE PLACE DURING UK OPEN IN LONDON

• Second Junior Open to feature on Nineball World Tour
• Set to take place on June 2-3
• $10,000 prize fund with winner and runner-up to also qualify for 2024 UK Open

Matchroom Pool is delighted to announce the launch of the Jayson Shaw Junior Open at this year’s UK Open set to run from May 30 to June 4.

Named after two-time Mosconi Cup MVP Shaw, the tournament will offer 64 of the best up-and-coming players the opportunity to play alongside the pros in the second edition of the UK Open at the Copper Box Arena, London.

As part of Matchroom’s commitment to growing Nineball and offering opportunities to all, the tournament will be the second junior open on the calendar alongside the SVB Junior Open which took place for the first time last year at Harrah’s Resort, Atlantic City during the US Open.

Carrying a prize fund of $10,000, the JS Junior Open will be free to enter with junior players battling it out for a free spot in the 2024 UK Open and prize money during the penultimate stages of the main tournament on June 2-3. Juniors competing will also receive a custom jersey provided by Onboard Sportswear as well as Kamui chalk and cue tip.

The final will also be live-streamed on the Matchroom Pool social media pages with coverage also set to feature during the live broadcast on Sky Sports in the UK and networks worldwide.

Juniors competing in the tournament will not be eligible to compete in the main UK Open Pool Championship due to match schedules. As part of the entry to the JS Junior Open, juniors will be offered a free season pass for them and one adult to enjoy the whole UK Open to have time to study the world’s best as they battle.

SOUFI CLAIMS MAIDEN ET TITLE

Reporter: Luke Riches on behalf of the EPBF
Photography: ©EPBF

MOHAMMAD SOUFI, the German-based Syrian, claimed his first ever Dynamic Billard Euro Tour title as he defeated World No.1 Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz (Spain) 9-6 to claim the Estonian Open in Tallinn. Staged at the Kalev Sports Hall in the Estonian capital city, the match was a re-run of last month’s World 9 Ball Championship final but this time the outcome was different as Soufi got the better of a sub-par Sanchez-Ruiz.

Soufi’s best ever finish on the Euro Tour was a semi-final in Lasko, Slovenia in 2021 but he seems to have found the confidence to take his always-entertaining game to the highest level. Sanchez-Ruiz came into the final on a roll of all rolls, having totally dominated tournament pool in the past 12 months. However, mistakes here and there allowed Soufi the opportunity to claim victory.

Commented Soufi, “I’m very happy to win this event. After our last match in Poland and coming second in the World 9 Ball Championship, it gave me a big push to win my next tournament. It inspired me.
