Day Three – ZIELINSKI TRIUMPHANT IN TREVISO!

POLAND’S WIKTOR ZIELINSKI took the honours in the final Dynamic Billiard Euro Tour of the year as he defeated Mats Schjetne of Norway 9-4 in the championship match at the BHR Treviso Hotel in the northern Italian city. It was the 20 year-old’s second Euro Tour title, his first coming in the same venue in 2017 when Zielinski became the youngest ever player to win an ET title.

“Treviso is a really nice place for me; I’ve won two Euro Tours here now, I met my girlfriend here, so yes, I really like this place!’ commented a delighted Zielinski.

“My girlfriend really helped me a lot here as I was playing five matches a day for two days in a row and I didn’t have time to eat so she bought me some pizza so I’m really thankful to her.

“I lost my first match of the tournament and was on the losers’ side so I had to win five matches yesterday so I was exhausted but I felt better today though. I felt I could have been out of the event yesterday so this morning I thought, ‘let’s see what happens’”, he added.

Seemingly from a never-ending production line of top-drawer Polish players, Zielinski always had too much for his opponent in the final. Ironically, Zielinski lost his opening match of the tournament to local player Filippo Cataldi, but from there he put his foot down.

Jeremy Jones: A Privilege To Represent The USA

JEREMY JONES: IT'S A PRIVILEGE TO REPRESENT THE USA

USA captain Jeremy Jones says it is a privilege to represent his country at the Mosconi Cup and has called on his team to be prepared for battle as they look to take the cup out of Europe's hands at Alexandra Palace, December 7-10.

BUY YOUR TICKETS HERE

Jones will lead his side for a second time with the addition of Shane Van Boening as playing-Vice Captain as they look to replicate their last visit to Alexandra Palace in 2018 where they ran out 11-9 winners: “I always said from day one from being vice. I like going to London to try and get the cup. I like having as many fans as possible. That energy bodes well for us. On paper, we’re underdogs, right? You can set aside being a captain. But you must look at ways that are a little bit of an underdog win and variables are one of them. And anytime you throw those variables, especially the variables that I think our team thrives on. I will be honest; those London fans can be like Yankee fans. If you start to make an error here or there, they can turn on you quickly. I am not really relying on that but it’s a part of it.”

“It’s special, it’s almost so special in the moment you do not get to feel it. You do get to feel it though, there are let downs good and bad. It’s weird being a knowledgeable pool player and not being in the arena, you kind of notice everything going on. The awareness is amazing, maybe because you’re wanting to win so bad or you’re paying attention wanting to fight for your guys out there in the arena."

Some outstanding standards from all 32 players who attended the event at London Snooker Tooting. Strong players across the field saw some intense match ups from the very start of the day.

There's no surprise that there was a solid impressive run from Rico Diks to reach the final but well done to Craig Osborne who came and conquered at London's Finest Pool's first major event yesterday with an outstanding standard of play for a very deserved win.

STRICKLAND: IT SHOULD SCARE THEM. I DON'T CARE WHAT THEY THINK

Earl Strickland believes Team Europe should fear his Mosconi Cup return at Alexandra Palace, London, December 7-10 with the nine-time winner not caring what his counterparts think of him.

BUY YOUR TICKETS HERE

The Pearl became USA captain Jeremy Jones’ first wild card pick joining Skyler Woodward, Tyler Styer, Chris Reinhold, and vice-captain Shane Van Boening in the red, blue, and white of America. “I didn’t really think I would be back again. I thought I had passed that point with my age but there’s one remarkable thing about me is that I am still intact at 60-years old,” said Strickland.

Strickland has been a part of some of the biggest moments in Mosconi Cup history over the years but captaining his country stands out most: “My favourite memory from when I was captain and we beat them 12-1 in 2001. Barry Hearn told me I was a genius. I have a couple of memories like winning it with the final nine-ball (2000). I can’t remember all the years. It’s hard to remember every year and what happened. I was ready to play. I still think I play as well as I ever did. Maybe my break isn’t as good as it once was. I still play a good game and I am capable of winning matches. That’s why I am not bowing out. If I knew I wasn’t capable of being a threat to win a match or point, then I would bow out and let someone else play. I can still play. I will be ready. I am healthy.”

10 BALL DIVISION

FORTUNSKI, KIBAROGLU & LARSSON TAKE 10 BALL GOLDS!

Reporter: Luke Riches on behalf of the EPBF

THERE WAS JOY for hosts Turkey as Eyllul Kibaroglu took 10 ball gold in the Ladies’ division while Poland took both gold and silver in the Men’s division as Mieszko Fortunski beat Daniel Maciol 8-4 at the Dynamic Billiards European Championships taking place in Antalya, Turkey. In the Wheelchair division it was Sweden’s Henrik Larsson who took yet another EC gold.

In the men’s final, Fortunski, the 29 year-old from Wroclaw, put in a superb showing as he led throughout to secure a deserved 8-4 victory. Maciol’s break let him down on occasions and Fortunski capitalised on it with some solid play. It proved to be back-to-back 10 ball titles for the Pole following victory in Treviso, Italy in 2019.

There were 115 present in the event including Joshua Filler who was making his debut at this year’s championship. He was knocked out though, at the hands of Roman Hybler (CZE) in a classic 8-7 win. Hybler went onto the quarter-finals where he was beaten by the eventual runner-up.

The semi-finals saw comfortable wins for the two Poles as Maciol beat BCA Hall of Famer Ralf Souquet, who collected yet another EC medal to go into his over-flowing trophy cabinet. Fortunski overcame Marc Bijsterbosch, who claimed a bronze also, to go with the silver he won in the straight pool division.

CHRIS REINHOLD COMPLETES TEAM USA

Chris Reinhold has become the final player to join Jeremy Jones' Team USA side for the 2021 Mosconi Cup, Alexandra Palace, London, December 7-10.

Reinhold made his debut last year in Coventry, England, and joins Skyler Woodward, Earl Strickland, Tyler Styer, and vice-captain Shane Van Boening on Jeremy Jones' side.

The Californian has been finding his feet in the professional ranks and will work closely with Jones over the next month to get ready alongside his teammates ahead of flying to London for the 27th edition of the Mosconi Cup.

"I am really excited. I have always wanted to experience a real Mosconi Cup with fans. I feel like I play better with fans there and the added pressure. Everyone who has made the team have told me it's like nothing else. I am going to practice and be ready to go," said Reinhold.

STYER RETURNS TO TEAM USA FOR MOSCONI CUP

Tyler Styer will return to Team USA for the 2021 Mosconi Cup, at Alexandra Palace, London, December 7-10.

BUY YOUR TICKETS HERE

The Pearl has won the joint-most amount of Mosconi Cup titles with nine and will go on the hunt for a historic tenth under the guidance of Jones and vice-captain Shane Van Boening.

Styer makes the USA Mosconi Cup team for a third year having been on the winning side in both 2018 during his rookie campaign and 2019 in Las Vegas. The Wisconsin native becomes Jeremy Jones' fourth American pick joining Earl Strickland, Skyler Woodward, and vice-captain Shane Van Boening with one further player set to be announced this Friday.

"I am ready to get back to work and get ready to take it down again. It feels great. The whole experience not just playing but being there for the whole week with the guys and bonding together and going out there and doing what you love whilst representing your country, you cannot beat that,” said Styer.

The 2019 Kremlin Cup winner made his debut at Alexandra Palace in 2018: "It was pretty insane; the crowd is hostile but they're incredibly knowledgeable. Of course, they're trying to help the Europeans win but when you make a great shot or out, they still acknowledge great pool. Of course, they're there to cheer on their guys but they just love to see great pool."

"Being able to bring back a win on US soil for the first time in a while was pretty cool. Alexandra Palace was pretty special we went over there, and we were huge underdogs, it was hard to beat that one, but it was great to repeat it in 2019."

STRAIGHT POOL DIVISION

GORST AND KAPLAN ARE FIRST CHAMPIONS AT EUROS 2021

Reporter: Luke Riches on behalf of the EPBF
Photography: ©EPBF

RUSSIA’S FEDOR GORST AND GERMANY’S INA KAPLAN are the straight pool champions at the Dynamic Billiards European Championships taking place in Antalya, Turkey.

Gorst, the 26 year-old Russian, had flown into Turkey following a heavy stint of tournaments in the USA but any signs of fatigue were set aside as he won eight straight matches to secure the first trophy of the annual Euro pool festival.

With 95 players competing in the division, Gorst managed to stay on the winner’s side with some dominant performances. Play resumed today at the last 32 stage and the 21 year-old superstar from Moscow didn’t disappoint as wins against Kim Laaksonen (Finland) and Michael Schneider (Switzerland) took him through to the quarter-finals.

The race moved up from 100 to 125 as Gorst despatched Tim De Ruyter (Netherlands) and then veteran Swiss Dmitri Jungo 125-22 to secure a berth in the final. His opponent, the ever-dangerous Marc Bijsterbosch, had lost his opening match to Alex Montpelier but had battled through the one-loss side, including a big win against fancied Thorsten Hohmann, to reach the last 32.

Wins against Fabio Petroni and a revenge victory over the aforementioned Montpelier (France) put the Dutchman into the medals and a semi-final win over Roman Hybler ensured a show-down with Gorst for the championship.
