THE 2021 INTERNATIONAL OPEN IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS!

The INTERNATIONAL is BACK with NINE days of pure pool from October 22-30, 2021. With two successful years under its belt, the INTL, as it is recognized, has quickly become one of the top tournaments in the world. Previous to last year’s pandemic cancellations, the INTL brought over 200 players from over 23 countries together to play under one roof. The players will be playing on the “triple gold standard” of professional pool: Diamond tables, Simonis cloth, and Aramith balls, and they will be playing in the same Sheraton Waterside Hotel ballroom as in the past, as well as its predecessor, the U.S. Open. To say the least, familiarity will be their only solace, for the competition will be fierce. As the 1st tournament of the Mosconi Points 2022 Calendar, the 2021 INTL places itself in a unique position in the professional players mind – get ahead early in the points! The winner of the 2021 INTL leads the Mosconi Point standings right away! Also, being sanctioned by the WPA, the INTL is one of the last stops on the WPA 2021 tour and the last chance at the coveted points is sure to make for some heated play! With past winners such as 2018’s Chang Jung-Lin and 2019’s Jayson Shaw, the players will definitely be charging out of the gate!

Needless to say, with successful freshman and sophomore events, Pat Fleming, the producer of the 2021 INTL, is not content with sitting on his laurels. This year, Pat has made some significant improvements to his third International 9-Ball Open. So, you ask, what has changed? With $50,000 added, the INTL now has an expanded field AND lower entry fee – 160 player field and $500 entry fee – and first place is still $30,000! This year, the INTL joins all other International Pro events by shifting to single elimination for the final 32 players. This is going to ratchet up the competition immensely! But that’s only the start.

For 2021, while 9-ball is the centerpiece, Pat is grooming the INTL into something more than “just a 9-ball tournament”. In addition to the 160 player 9-Ball Open, the International will be showcasing the inaugural 32-player 2021 INTERNATIONAL ONE-POCKET OPEN. The One-Pocket Open takes place the first Friday and Saturday of the 2021 INTL, prior to the start of the 9-Ball Open, extending the INTL two extra days. With $5000 added, an entry fee of $300, and a $4500 first prize, this is going to be filled fast – and fast paced - with the world’s best one pocket players! It is double elimination until the final 8 players. Then watch the sparks fly! It is sure to be the start of yet another great yearly INTL event.

Not content with two pro tournaments going on at one event, Pat Fleming, in partnership with Ra Hanna of On the Wire, is bringing back the junior’s event. Better than ever, the 2021 Junior Invitational Championship will have both a Junior Men’s AND a Junior Women’s division. On October 28-30, sixteen Junior Men and eight Junior Women will compete in their divisions to be the 2021 Junior Championship Men's and Women's 9-Ball Champions! We are very proud to support the next generation of professional players and very happy to give them the opportunity to play at the 2021 International.

He Golden in Capturing FargoRate Ohio Open

Reporter: Keith Paradise - CSI Staff Writer
Photography: Matt Porinsky

As crazy as it might sound, Mario He wasn’t exactly overflowing with confidence when he reached the final stages of this weekend’s FargoRate Ohio Open.

The semifinal and finals matches would be played on the event’s main table which is specially lit for televised broadcasts. The more intense wattage gives the equipment’s cloth a more slippery slide and the rails a little different bounce, factors that the Austrian struggled with early on. As a result, He want into the last day of competition with one idea in mind: win both sets to avoid the extra-frame shoot out.

He would ultimately go a step further: avoiding playing an entire rack altogether, as He benefitted from back-to-back pocketed 10 balls on the break to jump out to an early lead and defeat Roberto Gomez in straight sets, 4-4, 4-0, Saturday evening at Roberts Centre in Wilmington. The Austrian, who posted his first tournament victory since the 2019 Veldhoven Open, earned his first win on United States soil by surging ahead when opportunities were presented while also benefitting from mistakes from his opponents.

“Everything went well but it was not my best game,” said He, conceding that his stellar play was met with the occasional fortunate break during the four-day event. “You need some combination of all to win a tournament because there are so many good players.”

Throughout his day of play on the table, He noticed that his break shot was causing a ball from the last row to kick the 10 ball towards the rail. The Austrian decided on hitting the cue ball at slightly less than full power to try and unleash solid contact. What he ultimately unleashed was not one, but two, “golden breaks,” with the 10 ball kicking into the far corner pocket for one win and trickling into the side pocket for another. He broke a third time and watched as the 2 and 10 balls lined up for a combination shot near the side pocket, which he cleanly pocketed.

After taking four shots, He had a 3-0 lead.

“I was feeling pretty bad for my opponent, honestly,” said He.

The sympathy was more-than-likely short-lived, as He failed to pocket a ball on the break in the fourth rack then missed a kick attempt on the 2 ball after a Gomez safety. The Filipino cleared the table, used a break-and-run to pull within a game and won a safety exchange on the 3 ball to tie the set. After his break in the set-deciding rack, Gomez was faced with a tied up 3 and 4 ball, which he attempted a combination shot on but missed.

“I didn’t see a safety available so I went for the shot,” Gomez said after the match.

He cleared the table to snag the set, then took advantage of Gomez misplaying a safety on the 1 ball in the opening rack of the second set and broke and ran to build an early 2-0 advantage. The Austrian tacked on another game after Gomez overcut the 1 ball in the third game and closed out the match when Gomez missed the 3 ball in the fourth game.

The Road to Glory

Reporter: Angela Galane | Events & Sponsorships Coordinator - Predator Group

Three World titles were to be won on this final day of the 2021 Predator World Junior 9-Ball Championships in Kalgenfurt, Austria. In the morning, the faces of the youngsters warming up for their D-day showed the enormity of what could be achieved. To have their name added to the WPA Hall of Fame and to have their name cemented in 9-ball history.

Austria, being the organizing country fared well in the girls' division. One Austrian semi-final guaranteed one in the final. Kapeller, already having survived a hill-hill decider in the quarterfinal, had yet another one in the semi-final against her compatriot Lena Primus. This time she found herself on the receiving end though, falling victim to Primus' fighting spirit. The other semi-final was contested between Polish Pawelczyk and Korean Kim. This turned out to be a much more one-sided affair. Kim barraged through to the final with a 9-4 victory.

The final was what one can expect, filled with great shots, unforced errors and drama. Of the two, Primus was the one keeping her composure best in the first half of the match. What impressed in the second half was firstly the ferocious fightback by Kim, refusing to roll over. Then, when Kim was breathing down Primus' neck, the question was whether the Austrian would be able to withstand the pressure. She did just that and more. It unleashed her true potential and she powered on to victory. 9-7 the victory, a spot in the World 10-ball Championship for women in September here in Klagenfurt, Austria, but most importantly....the title for life, the World Champion 2021.

ALCAIDE: THIS SELECTION IS THE MOST SPECIAL YET

David Alcaide believes his selection for the upcoming 2021 Mosconi Cup at Alexandra Palace, London, December 7-10 is the most special yet.

BUY YOUR TICKETS HERE

The 2019 World Pool Masters champion became Team Europe's second pick from the Matchroom Pool World Rankings after a strong showing in 2021 which sees him join World No.1 Albin Ouschan on Alex Lely's side.

Alcaide will represent Europe for a third time after tasting victory last time out in 2017: "It's an amazing feeling. When I found out I was on the team, it was a big surprise for me. I knew that the US Open Pool Championship was the last tournament before the teams were picked and I know I've played well in the Matchroom Pool Series tournaments this year. I am so happy for myself and my friends. I cannot wait to celebrate."

He had a run to the semi-finals of the World Pool Championship eventually losing out to champion Ouschan: "After the pandemic, I played so good at Predator Championship League Pool and got to the final against Albin. At the World Pool Masters, I played well but lost early on. Then I headed to the World Championship where I played great and at the US Open where I've been consistent. I am happy to be on the team."

"Every player wants to play the Mosconi Cup and it's a dream for me, but this time is more special. This time I got my spot off the ranking rather than off a captain's pick. This is special, when the captain picks you, it's special but it's even more special when you've taken your spot from your performance on the rankings."

CARLO BIADO WINS THE US OPEN POOL CHAMPIONSHIP

Reporter: Matt Lynch - Media & Brand Manager - Multi Sport
Photography: Vincent Rochefort/Matchroom Multi Sport

Carlo Biado has won The US Open Pool Championship beating Aloysius Yapp at Harrah's Resort, Atlantic City in partnership with Caesars Entertainment and the Atlantic City Sports Commission.

RESULT - Carlo Biado 13-8 Aloysius Yapp

Biado started the final the strongest of the pair going into a quick 2-0 lead with back-to-back break and runs. The Filipino got the crowd going in the third after jumping the four to cut the one in, but it was Yapp who took it to trail 2-1 early on.

Yapp broke in the fourth but struggled for any position off it leaving a simple 1 2 combo to allow Biado the chance to run the rack and have the break in the fifth. It was Biado's turn to find himself stuck off the break and Yapp was soon back at the table where he executed the perfect table length bank on the 2 as he cut Biado's lead to one rack.

As ever in the tournament so far, Yapp never looked fazed by his opponent's pedigree racing into a 5-3 lead to put some breathing space between the pair for the first time in the contest. In the ninth rack it was all about safety as they did battle early on before eventually, Biado drew a foul from Yapp.

Yapp began to put daylight between the pair putting Biado in all sorts of trouble in the 10th rack where the two were tied up by the seven and with that Yapp lead 7-3. Yapp soon missed the nine which could've made it 9-3 and that's when the contest turned entirely in Biado's favour.

Biado ran the following two racks after the nine to only trail by two at 8-6. A pivotal moment coming in the following rack where Biado jumped the six effortlessly to pocket the one and soon pull it to 8-7. It was Biado's fifth successive rack to make it eight all and soon Yapp was staring down the barrel of defeat.

ALCAIDE & WOODWARD CONFIRMED FOR MOSCONI CUP

Albin Ouschan is already on Europe's side and Shane Van Boening for the USA after both became the first picks with Ouschan becoming World Champion in June and Van Boening being named Jeremy Jones' vice-captain.

Alcaide will make his third Mosconi Cup appearance having played in the winning 2017 side and in the only ever tie in 2006. Woodward meanwhile will represent the USA for the seventh consecutive year after being MVP in 2018 and 19.

Over the coming weeks, Europe's captain Alex Lely and Jones of America will announce their three wild card picks ahead of battle in December. Keep an eye on Matchroom Pool's Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for the latest.

Aloysius Yapp, Dennis Orcollo, Carlo Biado, and Naoyuki Oi are the four remaining players at the US Open Pool Championship heading into the final day of play at Harrah's Resort, Atlantic City.

Yapp has been a breakout star of recent months and continued from beating Shane Van Boening earlier today to beat Rodrigo Geronimo of the Philippines to book the first space in tomorrow's semi-finals where he will take on Orcollo.

The Singapore cueist passed up on some early opportunities including a miss on the seven which gave Geronimo the early advantage, but those early shakes were soon a thing of the past in the fourth rack after kicking the two into the middle pocket. Early exchanges went back and forth with Geronimo edging ahead going into the tenth rack, but Yapp took hold of proceedings from there on in. A 5 9 combo was Yapp's first of the day having missed one earlier in the match and earlier in the day against Van Boening.

Yapp laid a three-rack cushion at 8-5 before playing arguably the biggest shot of the match. He played a sublime cut on the eight before a bank in the middle pocket on the nine despite the odds stacked against him.

It was error-strewn from Geronimo at times and that was ultimately his downfall as Yapp got on the hill from his opponent's failed bank on the three. The victory was swiftly secured for Yapp to be in his second semi-final in the space of a week.

The experienced Orcollo stands in the way of Yapp making a maiden final berth at a Matchroom Pool Series tournament after the Filipino beat the industrious Max Lechner 11-7 live on Matchroom Pool's YouTube channel.

Defending champion Joshua Filler bowed out of the US Open Pool Championship at Harrah's Resort, Atlantic City as 9-ball's toughest tournament moved down to the last 16.

Scores

Alexander Kazakis, Billy Thorpe, and Judd Trump were amongst the names to depart in the morning session before the afternoon and evening action got underway with Francisco Sanchez Ruiz coming from 5-0 down to defeat Shane Van Boening 11-6 to join the last 16.

The Spaniard pounced on an uncharacteristic scratch from Van Boening in the 10th rack and then did the same in the 15th after it looked like the five-time champion would clear the table to cut the deficit to 8-7. Instead, Sanchez Ruiz went 9-6 up and completed a memorable comeback.

Reigning champion Filler followed up from that match knocking out America's Skyler Woodward in an 11-4 victory that saw the German continue his route towards the last 16. Mieszko Fortuński was next in Filler's way. Fortuński has battled away throughout the week and put in arguably one of his biggest wins of his career so far to defeat Filler 11-3 in front of a packed crowd around table two. That result saw Filler's tournament end whilst Fortuński continued his march.

David Alcaide joined his compatriot Sanchez Ruiz in the last 16, the 2019 World Pool Masters champion was trailing for large parts of his match against the Netherlands' Marc Bijsterbosch but came through 11-8 to put himself in the draw.
