Congratulations to Kev Simpson - 9 Ball Pool Series Event 2 Champion
The dust has settled and it’s time to reflect on Event 2 of the McDermott 9-ball series! 46
participants made their way to Solihull to try and battle their way to the title, and those
all-important ranking points.
The early rounds were as competitive as ever, with some of the usual suspects getting off to
strong starts like Kev Simpson, Luke Garland and Ashik Nathwani all registering heavy wins.
There were also some eye-catching results such as an in-form Alan Coton rolling back the
years against tournament favourite Benji Buckley, inflicting a heavy 7-3 defeat, Shane
Conroy putting on a clinic against Lee Rigby and then Kev Simpson, and Luke Hart in turn
making light work of Alan Coton, 7-3.
Into the later stages of the tournament Dave Hopkin held firm in a tight game against Ashik
Nathwani 7-5, and Kev Simpson managed to hold off his practice partner Ian McCormick by
the same score. Daniel Baker was also having a good day, making a run all the way to the
semi-final, after having dispatched of Luke Hart, David Hine and Ashik Nathwani, losing only
to the eventual tournament winner, Kev Simpson.
The last four came down to Alan Coton, Benji Buckley, Kev Simpson and Daniel Baker.
In an interesting quirk of the double-elimination format, fate threw up a rematch of Alan
Coton and Benji Buckley. The match went hill-hill, with Benji finding a way to scrape through
a tense final rack in which both players had chances. Alan may have inflicted a heavy
early-round defeat on Benji, but it was Benji who was booking his place in the final.
Meanwhile on the other table, Kev Simpson managed to pull clear and avoid any hill-hill
struggles, beating Daniel Baker 7-4.
And to wrap off the day, old rivals Kev Simpson and Benji Buckley faced off for the
umpteenth time in a match played full of respect and competitiveness, with Kev taking home
the title of McDermott champion, 64 ranking points, and £600.00 cash in a 7-5 victory!
Thanks for reading, and we hope to see you all on the 15th of May for Event 3!
