Ron Blatt of Blatt Billiards Honored with 2013 BCA President's Award

Broomfield, Colo. - June 10, 2014 - Each year the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) recognizes an outstanding individual who has made significant contributions to the billiard industry with the presentation of the BCA President's Award. This year, BCA Chairman Ivan Lee has chosen to honor Ron Blatt of Blatt Billiards with the prestigious President's Award. Ron, who recently retired, served as president and CEO for Blatt Billiards for more than 45 years. Blatt's business model includes a diverse range of services, including manufacturing, restoring and retailing some of the finest and most demanding handmade billiard and game tables available on the market.

Ron will be honored with this distinguished award at the opening of the BCA Summit in Louisville, Ky. on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 on the exhibitor floor at 9:45 a.m. All attendees and exhibitors of the BCA Summit are encouraged to attend the event and recognize Ron for his dedication to the billiard industry.

"Ron has dedicated his career to elevating the sport to its highest levels. Blatt Billiards begun in the 1920's when Ron's grandfather, Sam Blatt, began the company by crafting buck horns for pool cues, pool cues, and billiard balls - all by hand. Ron's father, Maurice Blatt, then added to the company's services by repairing pool tables in NYC when there were more than 4,000 pool rooms between the five New York City boroughs. Ron then made a name for himself and his company when he started restoring antique tables under the Blatt banner. "It was fun doing the restoration on old tables, because of what we would learn from the craftsmanship, construction techniques, and finishing techniques these old tables provided," recounted Ron Blatt.

"Ron Blatt and Blatt Billiards have always been the premier name in billiards," said Kurt Schmidt, owner and president of A. E. Schmidt Billiard Company. "When the truly elite wanted a pool table, they didn't call the names most people are familiar with-they'd call Blatt." As an industry leader, Ron was unique! As any New Yorker would say, he did it his way: he went after decorators long before anyone else had the idea, he ran lavish tournaments, while everyone else was giving up on them, and while everyone else invested in the suburbs, Ron stayed in his "funky old building" in Greenwich Village. Why? Because that was Ron and he liked it."

When Ron and his partner Eric Roeder took over the company in 1969, they focused on the restoration and the creation of the finest pool tables in the world. Each piece of every table that Blatt produced was hand sanded and polished in a rigorous nine-step process, which yielded a product that was legendary in both the billiard and interior design industries. Maintaining in-house quality was always a top priority for Ron and Blatt Billiards. When asked what legacy he thought he would leave behind for the rest of the industry, Ron immediately responded, "Quality! It was our absolute desire to give and provide the best product every time. At times it was to my determent, but I would never sacrifice quality for anything else."

Blatt Billiards' clientele is just as impressive as the tables themselves. Hundreds of famous and wealthy customers own a Blatt Billiards table. International Professional Pool Players Association (IPA) Tour heads for Scotland, and with free spectator entry and live streaming, what’s not to like?

With over 150 entrants the evidence is there that blackball pool is alive and well in Scotland as it is elsewhere, and the players are all gearing up ahead of the Compass Cars Scottish Open, Amateur, and Professional Trophy events this coming weekend (13th-15th June), from the Erskine Bridge Hotel, Glasgow.

Country’s represented include South Africa, Malta, Spain, France, Ireland, England, Wales – oh and Scotland of course (and in numbers), as they refuse to let these titles slip through their grasp without a serious fight. Kozoom is covering the World 9-Ball Championships

The Qatari Billiards & Snooker Federation "QBSF" have signed up Kozoom Productions to produce the live stream at this years 9-ball world championships in Qatar. Kozoom Productiions, probably the leading producer of billiards via the internet, are currently building the web page that will show all 14 tables live throughout the entire event. Kozoom Productions are also supplying the live scoring system to keep every pool fan on their toes with instant scoring on all matches, starting with the qualifiers on the 16th of June.

Team USA set for BCA Summit

2014 Mosconi squad to visit industry expo


WITH THE ANNUAL billiards industry gathering set for the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville from 25th to 27th June, American PartyPoker Mosconi Cup captain Mark Wilson is delighted to announce that his team will be in attendance for the duration of the event.

Wilson, who competed in the first two years of the event, has been charged with reinvigorating US fortunes in the annual transatlantic pool showdown, and will be on hand along with team members John Schmidt, Justin Bergman and Justin Hall.

All the interaction will take place at Booth 649 and team members will be available for challenge games – giving everyone the opportunity to win an “I Should Have Been Picked for the Mosconi Cup” T-shirt.

Commented Wilson, “We are there to engage with the billiards community and promote our journey to the 2014 Mosconi Cup. The Junior Nationals are being held simultaneously and Team USA will support and interact with those players who are the future of the game.

“Included with the festivities will be the use of a radar gun, the opportunity for pictures and autographs. The coaching staff will handle specific training questions. Everyone will meet special team member and retired Navy SEAL, Amir Pishdad.

“We expect this to be the most fun booth in the entire show and we will generate a lot of interest, excitement, and support, for both the Mosconi Cup and the future of the sport. This is a "grassroots" effort to stimulate interest by all that attend.

“I envision that we can aid unity with the billiards community and simultaneously do something good for the sport. This is an important step to re-establishing pride regarding the sport that we love,” he added.

Taking place in Blackpool, England from 1st to 4th December, the Mosconi Cup is now in its 21st year and features two five-man team doing battle over four days in what is pool’s Ryder Cup.

Wilson has also announced that Lieutenant Commander (retired) Amir Pishdad Jr has joined his coaching staff as he leaves no stone unturned in his efforts to inspire and rejuvenate US hopes.

A former Navy SEAL, Pishdad has graciously offered to give Team USA an up close and personal view of the SEAL’s secrets of success – dedication, hard work, “no excuses,” relentless positivity, and honor above everything.

Commented Wilson, “Our players were so impressed with his message that we made him part of our team. If we can dedicate even a fraction of the effort that Amir gave for our country, we will be well on our way to improving the sport.

“Amir is a man that has lived a life of dedication, hard work, and sacrifice. He has graciously offered to share that experience with our team; and the sport will be much better for his efforts.”

In the semifinal match, Eddie faced his biggest threat in the event as he faced off against the other Grandmaster (there were only two Grandmasters in the qualifier) Kapriel Delimelkonoglu.This was Kapriel's first qualifier. He kept up with Eddie in the beginning but after missing at a crucial point, Eddie calmly ran ball after ball taking the match 100-37 to earn a spot in the final!

In the bottom bracket, Cue Bar regular and a friend of Eddie Eugene Ok defeated Joe Wilson Torres 85-50, Andre Ramos 85-67 and Abel Barriento 85-56 to earn the right to play for a spot in the World 14.1!

In the final, both players were neck and neck but after a few missed opportunities by Eugene Ok, Eddie found a consistent rhythm and sailed away with the win 100-48!

Free Snooker In Barnsley

The best snooker players on the planet will be back at the Barnsley Metrodome in the coming months and fans can watch them play FOR FREE.

The qualifying rounds of world ranking tournaments were staged at the South Yorkshire venue for the first time last season, with green baize kings including Ronnie O’Sullivan, Judd Trump, John Higgins, Mark Selby, Neil Robertson, Steve Davis and Jimmy White among those competing.

And once again World Snooker will be giving away FREE TICKETS to fans for the Shanghai Masters Qualifiers, from August 12 to 15.

Top Class Snooker Heading To Llandudno

A major new snooker tournament – the World Grand Prix - will be staged in Llandudno early next year.

The event will take place at Venue Cymru in Llandudno on the north coast of Wales from March 16th to 22nd, 2015.

Created by World Snooker Chairman Barry Hearn, this new tournament will bring together 32 of the best players on the planet to compete for a top prize of £100,000. It will be televised live on ITV4 with a total prize fund of £300,000.

The top 32 players on a one-year ranking system running from the 2014 World Championship to the 2015 Gdynia Open will qualify for the tournament.

Hearn said: “This will be the biggest snooker event ever staged in North Wales and we are delighted to bring the sport to an area where we know we will get massive support. It’s an incredible opportunity for the people in Llandudno and the surrounding area to see the very best players competing for a prestigious new crown – and a huge top prize.

26th Annual BEF Junior Nationals Underway

June 25, 2014 (Englewood, CO): The 26th Annual Junior National 9-Ball Championships presented by the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) are currently underway at the Kentucky International Convention Center in conjunction with the Billiard Congress of America annual Summit.

79 participants from 21 states have arrived to vie for their chance at the coveted title of BEF Junior National Champion, and for an opportunity to represent our nation at the upcoming WPA World Junior 9-Ball Championships in Shanghai.

Players compete in four age divisions: 18 & Under Boys, 18 & Under Girls, 14 & Under Boys, and 14 & Under Girls. The annual Junior Artistic Pool Championships continues for its 21st year. Also, 25 billiard student-athletes with GPAs of 3.5 or higher will also be recognized at the event’s banquet as this year’s BEF Academic All-Americans.

Among the competitors are returning champions 14-year-old April Larson of Bloomington, Minnesota (2-time defending 14 & Under Girls division champion) and 16-year-old Zachary Hampton from Rocky Mount, Virginia. Hampton was the 14 & Under Boys champion in 2012 and last year claimed the 18 & Under Boys division at age 15.

The BEF also recognizes its premier sponsors for this event. Welsh Open Snooker Set For Cardiff

Snooker’s BetVictor Welsh Open world ranking event will be staged in Cardiff this season for the first time since 2004.

The tournament has been staged in Newport in recent years but now moves to the Motorpoint Arena in the Welsh capital and will run from February 16th to 22nd, 2015.

The BBC Wales-televised event will be contested by 128 players, all starting in the same round, with a top prize of £60,000.

This year’s final saw Ronnie O’Sullivan thrash Ding Junhui 9-3, making an incredible 147 maximum break in the last frame. Other winners in recent years include Stephen Maguire, Ding, John Higgins, Ali Carter, Mark Selby and Neil Robertson.

World Snooker Chairman Barry Hearn said: “The BetVictor Welsh Open has grown dramatically in recent years with increased prize money, growing live attendances and a new structure. While we are grateful to the people of Newport for their support, it is time to move the event down the M4 to the capital city to allow it to continue to build momentum.

“The Motorpoint Arena is a top class venue and a fitting stage for the world’s very best snooker players. This is a tournament with such a rich history, ever present on our calendar as a world ranking event for over 20 years. The new record !!!! 135 players in the EEBC Mak Marketing Junior Tour 2014

An international tournament for the youth took place in Lodz (Poland) . Players from Poland, Ukraine, Slovakia and Czech participated in this competition.The day before the guests from Ukraine, Czech and Slovakia had played with representatives of school pool clubs: UKS 13 Joker from Tomaszow Mazowiecki, Snikers Rekoraj and Dragon Srock. Those friendly matches and participation in Junior Tour in Poland are the part of the International Billiard Academy which is organized under the patronage of East European Billiard Council and Mak Marketing. 135 people competed in the main tournament on Saturday. The best of the boys was Kamil Szaszor from Limoniade Arkadia Tczew who defeated in the final match Wiktor Zielinski from Hades Poznan 4:3. In the beginning Szaszor was loosing 3:0!!! Vitaly Patsura from Ukraine and Daniel Maciol from Nosan Kielce won the bronze medals. Magdalena Bonek from UKS Labiszynianka Labiszyn became the winner amongst the girls. In the final was better than Anna Wolak from Pino Debica and won 3:0. Agata Sidlo from Nosan Kielce and Daria Kuta from UKS Promyk Czerniewice got the third place. " I'm very proud to be a director of the tournament. 135 young pool player in one event !!!! It is fantastic !!! " said Dariusz Kobacki .

Summer Billiard Academy

35 people will take part in the Summer Billiard Academy organize by East European Billiard Council in Bulgaria. " I'm very glad, that we have participants from 5 countries - Georgia, Ukraine, Poland, Belarus and Slovakia. I hope , they will spend nice time in Bulgaria on the Black Sea beach, play a lot of matches and get to know each. CueSports International, Henderson, Nevada (July 3, 2014) – CueSports International would like to remind everyone that onsite entries will be accepted for the 9-Ball Challenge, 10-Ball Challenge, and the Grandmaster 8-Ball at the BCAPL National Championships! Anyone can play in these events, regardless of skill level, for seven (7) days of non-stop tournament action. Note: if you are not a BCAPL league member, no problem! Simply purchase a “Player Membership” for just $25 and be eligible to compete in these events.

There are some great incentives for people to participate in the BCAPL National Championships this year! First, all open tables will be free play – no tokens! Also, CSI will be conducting the first ever CSI Invitational events, which will feature 16 of the world’s very best players. Participants can watch the pro events in person or in their hotel room absolutely free and each of the pro players will be available at least one hour every day for free group lessons, demonstrations, autographs, etc. We will also conduct the first ever CSI Pro/Am Challenge, a Scotch Doubles event where players can bid to partner with their favorite pro.

Asian Tour Event Two

Following discussions with the promoter of 2014 Asian Tour event two, World Snooker announces that unfortunately the event will not take place, due to a range of issues that cannot be resolved within the short timescale. The tournament was due to run from August 26 to 30.

We continue to work alongside the China Billiards and Snooker Association and our partners and promoters to find new opportunities for even more tournaments in the region.

Verhoeven Open Tournament, New York (USA)

The former Sang Chun Lee tournament in New York will be played with a record number of European players. The field is led by Belgian Frédéric Caudron, the world champion and reigning title holder in New York. Other big names are Raymond Ceulemans, Torbjörn Blomdahl, thingy Jaspers, Eddy Merckx, Kyung-Roul Kim and Tayfun Tasdemir. The total number of players in the tournament, which is played in the Carom Café in Flushing, New York from 15 until 20th of July, is 85, of whom 36 are from European and Asian countries.
