Just watched the clip on protube.

Have you ever seen a more bizzarre game?
15 cue balls and a black, but you use the black as a cue ball..

Does anyone play it in the UK?

pooliscool, are you darkside in disguise?

At least there would be no issues with the colour of the balls clashing with cloth....unless the cloth was white!

In England this game is called killer I believe. Often played in public houses.

I guess you can tell I'm blinkin' fascinated with the game myself. That's why a Russian "Pyramid" Billiards video will often feature in The Pro Tube. I've got a link to a set of rules, and I will be translating them into English shortly and adding them to our ever more extensive collection of pool and billiard games rules.

The amazing thing about Russian Billiards is that the balls are huge, 67mm in fact, but the pocket are only 4mm wider than a single ball, and that's why they often strike the shot with a lot of force... To "help" the ball into the pocket a bit. Amazing accuracy needed to make the "in-offs" in this game, and spectacular to get to see such a high class match.

I very much doubt that there is anyone playing it on these shores, unless there is a secret table in a Russian workers club in London perhaps?

We think there's only ONE public three cushion billiards table in the UK!!!

So sad!

I recently added the rules for "Italian 5 Pins Billiards" - another fascinating national game that I feature on The Pro Tube sometimes.

I would love to see those rules B.D.
So the pockets are slightly tighter than the 5" brunswick bags then? :-D

Woooh, many thanks to Roman Certik from Slovakia who emailed me to say that he is a regular Pro9'er and spotted our discussion here about Russian Billiards and directed me to an English version of the rules, saving me a lot of time... Thanks again Roman!

The rules can now be found here...

Thanks Dave & Roman.

So from what I can gather from the rules, all you have to do is pot eight balls with any ball as a cue ball, either in off or straight. I dont understand why there are numbers on the balls, but the game looks difficult enough as it is with those tight bags.

Found this Russian billiards trickshot clip...awesome stuff!

ive played this game quite a lot. money games in the east playing pyramid can go into the $100k-500Ks :)

there are 2 most common games, amerikanka and moskovskaja. in the 1st one u pot any ball with any ball first to reach 8. u can pot the cue ball as well as the object ball. in the 2nd you only use the designated cue ball to pot also to reach 8. you can pot the cue ball in which case the opponent can remove any ball off the table and you continue off the line.

the little rules seem to consistantly change but that is the main idea

Ahh, thanks for that Oliver, any idea why there are numbers on the balls?

I guess that I've published the rules for Moskovskaja then, is that right?

the balls are numbered cause there are various other games that are played similar to rotation but they are not very popular.

Hey Guys :)

I'm not sure if they are still available, but I remember that a set of Russian Pyramid balls were available in a smaller size, but I can't remember if they were in snooker or American Pool size, as they were in a catalogue I once got from Sam Leisure :)

It might be worth asking Aramith if they make the Pyramid sets in a smaller diameter and if so, it could possibly be a new addition to the pro shop for anyone who would like to get a set to use on a snooker table :)

Just a thought :)

Willie

Hey Willie!
Long time no speak....where are you these days?
Still in Belfast?

I see what you say regarding the smaller balls, but I think the whole essence of the game is the tiny pockets...I doubt anyone has a snooker table with the same ratio...

Hey buddy :), what's rollin? :)

I'm doing ok, but have been battling depression over the past number of years, but I've been gradualy feeling a bit better lately and so, hopefuly that will continue :)

How is everything there with you? :)

Nah, Club9 has been closed down now for almost a year now and there ain't any other good clubs in around this area, but that's life :)

Yeah, I see what you mean buddy and it makes perfect sense :)

Perhaps if they were available in the American Snooker size, (2 1/8", slightly larger than a std snooker ball (2 1/16", but smaller than an american pool ball (2 1/4") that it would be most ideal ball size to use on a snooker table :)

The larger ball size would reduce the margin of pocket space and at the same time, the rails would be able to handle the larger ball size that little bit more safely, as the ball jumping off the rails so much, if at all :)

I thought that it would be worth mentioning at least :)

Willie

Thats a shame Willie, glad to see you back though!
Sam and Joe had a great club there, what a pity it didnt work out for them. Pass on my regards if you see them.

As for me, I am working abroad these days on an oil rig and I'm glad to say they have an 8ft Brunswick table on board....heaven! No 9 ball action in Aberdeen any more. I used to run the league with Jim OHare, but we had to give it up due to work commitments.

Cheers
Brian

on a pyramid table the pocket openings are cut straight and they allow 0.75mm on each side of the ball. so if you are playing a shot at an angle you have to hammer it to force it into the pocket. also it is impossible to pot even say 5 inches off the cushion. wouldnt be the same game on a snooker table im afraid.. .havent heard of any tables in the uk. although im sure abramovich has one ;)
