How gutted am i for Swail? He battled back so hard from 12-8 and especially when Wengbo thought he'd won the match at 12-9. So did the ref put the balls back in a different position and should Wengbo have been a sportsman and told the ref. In my opinion 99.9% of the Pro's would have either told the ref or alternatively played the shot the same way off the cushion. I hope Ronnie thrashes him to be honest. I didn't like him for celebrating too early and I thought it would have been just desserts if Swail had won. If Swail had won he may have been back in the Top 16 too. But of course he did have a chance to win it and missed the brown. Looks like a Ronnie v Hendry and Ebdon v Maguire semi's to me. With Ronnie v Maguire final. ----------------- Multiple winner of the Solihull Wednesday knockout competition. [ This message was edited by: chirst147 on 2008-04-29 09:31 ]

I think everyone agrees that the pockets are like buckets this year, and in the back of my mind I thought there would be a chance of two 147's this year, especially after Ronnie banged one in so relatively early, but it's still an absolutely awesome achievement! Actually turning into quite a compulsive World Snooker Championship after the relatively dull first round draws!

I think the target should be a 155 now, 147's are too easy! To be honest im getting bored with seeing such low scoring! lol
At this rate the prize for a maximum will be £20.00

!!! QUOTE !!! I think everyone agrees that the pockets are like buckets this year. Who's everyone? Word is - from what I've heard from those in the know etc... - it's harder to make a 147 than ever. This year the pockets are tighter than ever at Sheffield. Think about it - who pays the £147k prize for a maximum? It's underwritten by insurance companies who I'm pretty certain employ 'experts' to advise them if it's a worthwhile 'bet'. The only critique I've heard so far that suggests conditions are any easier, was from Steve Davis today when he mentioned that the cloth was thinner than it used to be when he played at the Crucible which makes the balls run further and truer (sp?). My opinion, for what it's worth, is that the prize money for a maximum is so high now, that players, especially lower-ranked players, will make a greater effort to achieve a max break on TV as the financial reward for a 147 is likely to be more than any prize money thay might earn from their tournament earnings. What's the runner-up prize again? Funny state of affairs. But I'm guessing that's why there's more max breaks. Not coz the pockets are bigger. Just my 2p worth... x BS

The break got harder and harder towards the end. The pressure he must have been under to make his first 147 and do it at the Crucible must have been immense especially on that final black because he wasn't perfect. That was absolute class and if his name was O'Sullivan we'd be calling him a genius. Well done son! The game's gone mad! I also wondered if the pockets were bigger (not big) this year because I've seen a few more than usual go in off the knuckles. I've played on the one in the cuezone a few times and it's as tight as... a very tight thing but I don't suppose it follows that the tables in the arena are the same. lets worry about the size of are pockets in 9ball and 8ball tournaments, snooker pockets are tight enough we would all struggle to make 50 on them.after all we play on 6inch bags, lets sort the pockets out in are game before worrying about snooker tables

nice post Karl. Even though pool is a different sport and requires bigger bags, sometimes they are just ridiculous. I'm sure Daz Appleton would also vouch for this along with any other guys who went to the world 8-balls. In my opinion playing on table with big bags and then going to my m8's brunswick is very difficult, as he has tournament tripple shimmed pockets. Unfortunatly places like Rileys are a business and i suppose they have larger bags in clubs so the average players can still pot balls. Cant imagine how long a tournament would take down my local with tripple shimmed pockets [ This message was edited by: Ads on 2008-04-30 09:54 ]

I have always thought the pockets on the TV tables are big... just take a look when they slow roll a baulk colour in at how much gap there is in between each side of the ball then go back and take a look on your local club tables.
Also, don't forget those TV tables are supposed to be as good as they can get so the conditions are meant to be optimal for playing to the best of one's ability.
I doubt you would see as many high end breaks (130+) if the tournaments were held on beat up old Rileys tables or worse.....thinking about it can it get much worse than that :p

Shame you don't get euro sport. Snooker is almost on TV non-stop between BBC and eurosport. Different commentators. Anyone remember the legend, Whispering Ted Lowe. Here's one of his stories: . Joe Davis was trying a shot that he'd previously achieved by climbing partly on to the table but in view of his advancing years played the shot left-handed instead to allow the commentator to say "at the age of 68, Jo has given up trying to get his leg over and has resorted to using his left hand". Classic!!
