Just seen the video and that's just ridiculous. Must be a camera trick cos the short's not possible - period! I've proved it several times now :)

It's hard to tell, but looking at the video it look slike he's shooting slightly into the side rail with stacks of left side, the extra friction from the rail will mean you get even more side on the white, it's then coming away form the rail and just clipping the edge of the bank ball. I'm not 100% convinced that this isn't camera trickery yet, I'll be having a go at it myself later on today! I have simonis 860 too... Will let you know if I even get close. I think dave also has a point with dirty balls! if they are too clean, the balls won't grip enough to get enough side transfer. That is, if this is possible at all.

I had a go at this shot for about 30 mins last night... The best I got was to bank the ball to about 3 inches down the rail from the opposite side pocket. Considering I was playing the shot with clean Aramith TV balls and on Simonis 860 cloth, I think that with heavier balls and a dirtier contact, I can see how this could actually be possible. However, I can't see how you could make 3 out of 4 attempts, I find that either a fix, or amazing! not sure which yet. Did anyone else get closer to making it?

well, working on the dirty ball bad cloth scenario, i went down to my local rileys where theres plenty of that and tried out this shot. ash and aslam will vouch i got the far opposite knuckle twice in about twenty goes, but alas still not in. I honestly think its possible just a very hard shot. This geezer on the video is using a bridging tool though. dont know how much difference that makes?

either way it brought comical relief to a tedious practise session!

cool... good stuff... I think that the heavier balls might really help...
also... did you play into the rail first to get more side? or just straight?

i played from second diamond loads of left and aimed at the join between pocket and cloth (far side as you look at it).

I think that on the video, it is played from the 1st diamond, and yes, the ball set being used, Brunswick Centennials, are slightly heavier than super aramith sets, which is genberally much better for being able to generate the little bit extra english on both the cueball and object ball :)

If any of you guys have a set of Centennials, try this shot using them, and you'll find that you have a much better chance of making the shot, but I will say that there is a possibility the guy in the video might be very well using the heavier "Barbox" type cloth, which is a good deal slower, but will allow the rails to take more juice and therefore, be able to make tougher banks shoits like this one, as you can turn the ball that bit more easily :)

Whichever way you look at it, it's a great bank pool player's shot :)

Willie

Haha, you have got good taste in billiards equipment Jon :)

I must admit, that I wish that more tournaments would start using Centennials again, as to me, it's better to use a slightly heavier ball because to get a really good break, take s that little bit more effort, and also, it gives the game that traditional feeling, as if you're in the same tournament in the old days with guys like Jimmy Caras, Willie Mosconi, Steve Mizerak, and all the other greats to ever hold a cue stick :)

I know that if I were ever to have a pool room, and was running tournaments, I would only be using centennials, but in the TV set version :)

Willie

I think the point thats been over looked here is the fact that Vern Elliot could pull this shot off in the 40's, 50's and 60's when the equipment was far inferior than what we play on today.

He will have probably being playing on a napped cloth with old style "clay" balls and i think humidity in the pool room would have played a factor.

I think the shot can be done but not on Simonis cloth with Super Aramith balls.

Nice 1 Lee! LOL.

You got me..........almost!

The truth is.......

I have been playin' with centennials (again) for about 6 months now.

(just after you came around for a game)

The History goes like this, if you're interested?

I bought my brunswick gold crown IV table and insisted on some centennials along with it!

I played with the C's (for short) for a couple of years until a very good friend of mine (who is more reknown for his cue knowledge) told me that they were heavier.

I was distraught!

I checked it out and I could only ever get the same answer.

!!!!!!!!!!!Centennials weigh exactly the same weight as pro aramith TV ,BLA BLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(the difference was only cosmetic! I was told from a !Very high! source)

BUT......I caved in.......And went back to the PRO-TV balls that we use on the tour. NO CHANCE OF GETTING IT WRONG! I suppose.

HOWEVER!!!!!
about six months ago(I realised I wasn't gonna rule the world) I decided to play with the C's again.

This is exactly for the reason Willie said, I love the history.
!!!!These are THE Balls!!!!!

I'm gonna post this (debate) on a new post about the Balls.

Anyway Lee!
'bout time you came 'round for a game on the B with C's.
LOL.

Jon.
