I'm bored at work and have just been reading through some player profiles, quite a few players have mentioned that they started playing 9 ball from a snooker background of some sort and i was wondering what sort of high breaks everybody has??

I have never played any competetive snooker so my highest break is a miserable 35, anybody got lower? :-D

I made 58 about 10 years ago when i played a couple of times a week at college. Had a game a few months ago and I was terrible, think i'll stick to pool these days.

english pool is a much bigger sport in coventry, unfortunately.
I play it quite often but i dont think it helps my 9 ball game.

yeah i think playing more than one type of cuesport will harm your game, you have to adjust to cloth, ball sizes, angles, amount of spin, pocket sizes, rails etc it's just not worth it imo.

i've been told by a player considerably better than me, that i should play more snooker as it will improve my cueing and potting accuracy which will be easily transferrable back to 9 ball, do you not agree with this advice rackrunner?

I once cleared the colours (not on spots either), but my highest break is 43.
Really prefer US pool to snooker or marbles though

there are aspects of which snooker in particualr can slightly improve your game like long potting and accuracy, but the way the balls react, the stupidily bouncy cushions, banks and the amount of spin you can put on cueball can throw your nine ball game off

imo it's not that to easy transfer those aspects back to nine ball, i've been trying to coach a very promising talent in my local club down in Bristol in nine ball, but he loves to play all 3 english american and snooker but after he has been playing them for a while it takes him a few days to get back into a nine ball mentality, but hopefully if i can convince him to stick to nine ball we'll have another nine ball pro, he can run 2 racks in row at 14.

I can tell you that I think Mark Gray has had a few high breaks - a couple of 147's (approximately 34 of them!!!)

2 against me!!! But it was a pleasure picking the balls out - this is going back 2 or 3 years though.....shouldve took my white gloves along...lol lol lol

147's are great but they only win one frame. There is a lot more to professional snooker than just big breaks, there are thousands of players out there who can knock in centuries but only a few can compete at the highest level.

i played snooker for years, only just recently converted to pool. highest is 140. i'm of the opinion that you should play 1 or the other, not both. found that when i have to play snooker matches now my pool suffers the next time i play. much more screw used in snooker as opposed to more side or english in pool. takes a lot of getting used to when you first convert. alan

Theres just not the money in the game of snooker anymore and for those players on the cusp, its virtually impossible to make the transition into the top 16 / top 8; Thats where you need to be to make a living.

Cusack is right about hundreds of players out there and I suppose it's all about consistency at that level and also the tables the pro's play on are ridiculous. It's like playing on glass as the cloths are so thin and quick - the pockets are ridiculously tight - nothing like club tables and the knuckles are square.

I read once that Dominic Dale (who aint a bad player) when ranked 22 in the world, earned appox £20k that year.

When compared to say, 22nd in the world at golf - that person would more thank likely be a millionaire.

We say there's no money is snooker (£12,000,000) But where is the 9-ball (£12,000)?

I know the second figure is a bit low, but you get the idea.
