My mate has just told me that at his local Rileys club it was shut this morning as the staff members/manager were met at the door by an administrator.
He claims that they have shut down the club as Rileys have gone into liquidation and that they are to be taken over by Valiant Sports.
It doesn't sound good for the prospects of future events although i'm sure that the majority of clubs will remain un-hindered and continue as normal whilst all this goes on in the background.
I just hope that it doesn't effect the tour too much considering all the hard work that has been put into it so far!

it is completely shocking news, My local club has also gone under. I feel like there is an empty part of me now as i have been going to that club (even before it was a rileys) for about 14 years now (since i was 8 years old) [ This message was edited by: Ads on 2009-03-25 11:23 ]

I've just been looking at the book a table section on the companies website and Wakefield and Scarborough are missing which is understandable but so is Barnsley.......does anyone know if this one is shutting too?????
Is there a list for the closures?

It was just the local one to me in Rugeley....to be honest you could see why it would get shut as it was a massive property which drew in little turnovers i imagine....
It's hard to say what's likely to happen i'm sure that there will be a number of clubs still open for the foreseable although is it going to go into a kind of Woolworths situation i wonder where they will keep open a few of them for as long as they can?

yes but scarborough surely wasn't dead wood, it was the best club i think i have been to, maybe they didn't get the takings that they needed but they hadn't even been open that long.
That was the club that i was most hoping we'd go back to this year on GB9

I've heard rumours for months that Rileys were in trouble but its still a shock when it happens.
I hope Preston doesnt close, im running a tournament there in September!

Maybe now players will appreciate the lengths Rileys went to in order for us to hold our event in Croydon.
7 tables recovered, 2 completely recushioned too, lots of new pockets and bolts, re-levelling etc. Ok they could not do it all but I for one was very grateful for the effort the club put in (and particularly Howard Miller and Ian Huett) to convince the powers that be to an out of plan spend - all because of our tour.
Times are hard at the moment, I've just been told 1228 of us in my work place will be losing our jobs and we'll find out who in a month's time. And it's the same in lots of other places too.
Behind the scenes a lot of work has gone on to ensure the tour keeps going against the odds (as demonstrated in Croydon), yet players (a small few) still complain.
I feel for all the staff in the affected Rileys venues, particularly Scarborough where the team were just brilliant. Fingers crossed for Barnsley who are also a top class team who take a real pride in their club.
