Sorry if this has ever been covered: my knowledge may be hazy, but is'nt a hosting country allowed to add a sport or 2 to the Olympic rosta (so long as it is played in 35 country's or more) - in the case of 9-ball that has got to be true..................if so why have the chinese not added it (surely they have many to choose from and are possible gold winners) i may be missing something....................or is it a possible for 2012 London opinions!! lol, i would love for 9-ball or billiards in general to be added to the olympics, but it's just not going to happen i feel.
Same as Darts and snooker, all seen as pub games (snooker less so) and not sports

I always have the argument put to me that darts and snooker / pool aren't physical so not sports.
Isn't shooting in the olympics? That's hardly physical is it?

There's something about being "military" activities that qualify archery and shooting I believe, but I can't find it at the moment. What I DID find was this: (It's from Wikipedia, and I always have doubts about the veracity of anything on Wikipedia as it can be modified by the general public, and we've all seen what can be done by spiteful people in cases like this, but I've no reason to believe this bit is particularly innacurate)... ---QUOTE--- Recognized sportsMany sports are not included in the Olympic program but are "recognized" by the IOC. At any time, a recognized sport may be added to the Olympic program in future Games, as result of a recommendation of the IOC Olympic Programme Commission, followed by a voting of the IOC membership. Usually, the sport appeared as a demonstration sport or event of similar status before being officially promoted. The respective IFs are responsible for ensuring that the sport's activities follow the Olympic Charter; from the moment their sport is recognized they become official Olympic federations and can assemble with the IOC and remaining Olympic IFs. Recognized sports that are not part of the competition schedule for an Olympic Games usually become part of the schedule of the World Games. On July 11, 2005, the IOC voted to drop baseball and softball from the Olympic program for 2012, a decision that was reaffirmed on February 9, 2006. Nevertheless, the IOC members rejected their replacement with karate and squash, which were selected from a list that included golf, inline speed skating, and rugby sevens. During its last meeting of 2007, on December 12, the IOC Executive Board approved the provisional recognition of both cricket and climbing for a two-year period. The following sports, though not contested in the Olympic Games, are recognized as Olympic sports by the IOC: Air sports Bandy Billiard sports Boules Bowling Bridge Chess Climbing Cricket DanceSport Golf Karate Korfball Lifesaving Motorcycle sport Netball Orienteering Pelote Basque Polo Powerboating Racquetball Roller sports Rugby Squash Sumo Surfing Tug of war Underwater sports Water skiing Wushu ---END QUOTE--- Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_sports

Personally, I've never seen the attraction of pool being an Olympic Sport - poker makes a fine living for it's top players without being recognised by the Olympics. I mean, I know it wouldn't hurt, in fact it would be terrific for our sport, but I just don't think we should bank on it. At the same time, I don't see how Sport England, or the Olympic Committee could refuse a request from a UK delegation for cash to aid our sport and players (to pay for a national coach for instance, or to sponsor some of our players in international tournaments) when we have champions here that are putting the "Great" into Great Britain, and I think we should strike before the iron goes cold. The Dutch players get this level of sponsorship from their Olympic committee and I think it's reasonable that the UK should get something too! ----------------- Authorised Pro9 forum advertiser/sponsor [ This message was edited by: BigDave on 2008-08-11 15:31 ]

dave, just thinking about the exposure and what it would mean to the game within the UK..................and i think it would make a massive difference to everyone. Most people think only of snooker as a cue sport; and avoid it because they think that it is boring - pool is different and due to the volume of viewers watching any sport britain is involved in due to it being part of the Olympics - it would open a few eyes.................and hopefully wallets (to a sponsorship degree)

well we can all dream. To be honest though, i agree with Cletus in saying that if it was going to come in, China would have been the place to do it because of the volume of players that play in Asia. Maybe Dave can organise a petition

We can't have pool in the olympics or anything like that because it's racist. I mean, a white putting down and getting rid of all the other colours!

Seriously though, if we can apply for some kind of sponsorship or funding then we should do this for our top players, it's a no brainer.
How many world champions are currently on GB9 again?

No its an Eddie Murphy movie; well, anyhoo in one of his films he has an eccentric black guy (sometimes him, sometimes another), like in Bowfinger, rant about the white man (i.e the pool quote) - he talks of a script that contains 3000 letters K in the script "when divided by 3 thats 1000 messages of the KKK in this script"
Boomerang is not a film about pool though - it just uses the theme for a gag about racism
