You are right, I do need help...from the authorities to keep men like you away from me. No, I don't want your sweets.
I have to go now. It is my time.

Just watched an interview on cuesport tv with Gareth Esprit and he actually comes across quite well and seemed to have some decent visions for the game.
He was talking about Darkside Promotions and an event called 'Fistful of Dollars' in Bristol that clashed with the Weert Open. I have done google searches and can find no info. on either. As I say, when I saw him at the table he seemed a bit nutty, a jester some may say but in the interview he speaks well and seems quite clued up and genuinelly interested in pool so I am not sure which is the real persona???
Did he give up on this Darkside Promotions stuff like he did in his recent match or was the whole idea a figment of fantasy in his own head?

THANKS 43 players were in it so at the least £1290 was taken in fees but as some paid £35 rather than £30 you are correct in saying £1300+ was taken. The prize money breakdown was something that I questioned on these forums beforehand not because I wanted a big payout (I was one of the weaker players there so stood little chance of actually winning let alone reaching the quarters) but just for accountability. Correct me if I am wrong but Rileys took £80 for their services and the prize money added up to about £900, which leaves £320 which I can only assume went to the organiser minus the cost of the two trophies. At no stage in the day was the prize breakdown written down and displayed to all which was disappointing I thought. Also another thing was that in several of the photos taken at the event and at the entrance to the club there was a poster advertising the tournament which stated '£1000 prize money - subject to entries'. In the end 43 people entered - 3 more than were meant to be allowed and still the prize money did not add up to £1000, why is this? Again, correct me if I am mistaken on any of this. Also, the organiser said that he wanted to pay out 24 places and in the end got 40+ entrants (the maximum) and yet decided to pay out 8 players. Why the jump from paying 24 to paying 8, why not jump to 16? It just seems weird how based on 40 entrants a framework and proposed breakdown couldn't be published. Overall, I thought the tournament was very well run but didn't like how the prize money was decided and also why a template of prize money payouts couldn't be given before the tournament based on 40 entrants paying £30 to enter, it isn't hard to do at all and takes about 5 minutes. ----------------- Conceive, Believe, Achieve! Prize breakdown in relation to total take from entry fees should be a prerequisite.
If not all monies taken are paid out as prizes I'd expect that details of how much was leftover, to whom it went, and why should be available to players. This should be advertised up front so that players can make an informed choice as to whether to participate or not.
Did this not happen?

Did this not happen? Finally, someone here who feels the same as me and sees sense, thank you! In answer to your question, no this did not happen. You will be able to see on earlier pages that before the tournament myself and another poster (CoolHandLuke) questioned the organiser regarding prize money and asked about a % breakdown, etc but he wasn't fully forthcoming. When I met Chris he seemed a very nice bloke and did a fantastic job in terms of organising the tournament and making sure it ran smoothly etc, my only issue was over disclosure of prize money. He would have almost certainly knew what he had to pay Rileys for use of the club beforehand along with his 'fee' for running the tournament and cost of trophies alng with any other overheads if any. These should have been published beforehand. Then the prizefund based on 40 entrants paying the minimum entry fee could easily have been calculated and a breakdown been established, this would not have taken long at all and as you say nicknameless, would have been beneficial to potential players in making an informed decision whether to enter or not. Similarly a 'rough' breakdown could have been posted here for 32 players, 24, etc just to give rough ideas rather than making a snap decision on the day. You would use the £30 fee as a guideline then all extra £5s on the day are a bonus. I am unhappy with the line on the tournament poster that said '£1000 prize pool - subject to entry'. If my calculations are correct then £1000 wasn't paid out with 3 more than the advertised maximum 40 players paid and played. This amounts to false advertising and is disappointing to say the least. Also, regarding the fee to the organiser: If I am honest I feel that what he took £200+ was too much. However, if he had stated before the tournament 'I am taking £200+ for the hard work I am putting into setting up and organising this tournament' then all players would know the score and could make an informed decision on entry. To not state this beforehand IMHO is wrong. I would also like to state here that I am not here to cause trouble, I am a huge pool fan and want to see the game move forward etc. I am just making constructive criticism, suggestions and debate on issues that I feel are important, particularly at this tournament as I played in it myself. I apologise if any of my figures or assumptions are wrong. To me it just seems ridiculous and wrong that a prize breakdown based on 40 entrants paying £30 each wasn't published before the tournament. ----------------- Conceive, Believe, Achieve! If these figures are correct I can't believe how much was taken out of the prize fund. Last year I ran a tournament at Rileys, Solihull, it was a big multiple group stage event using 20 tables. I took £50 for my expenses, Rileys didn't want anything as they made their money from food/drink and the manageress ran a blackout card to pay for the event trophies. Therefore vitrually all the entry money was paid out. Chris Billings needs to give us some feedback and answers here, I too was interested in reading his wish to pay out 24 places if he got enough runners but in the end even though the event was oversubscribed he pays to last 8 and pockets the rest?? I really hope there has been a mistake. ----------------- Andy Warden, GB9 - Authorised Pro9 forum advertiser/sponsor √ [ This message was edited by: cueman on 2008-06-18 11:03 ]
