I am only passing on what Mark has said to me.....
He does not like Mark "The Marksman" Gray and is looking to change it to Mark "The Granite" Gray.
I am only passing things on for him whilst he's in UAE.
I'm sure he will address this thread once he returns.....

Bah... Man, he can't do that now! LOL... I don't think any decent player has ever chosen their own pool name... Names were originally applied to identify dangerous players in their usual locations - and for example "Minnesota Fats" the place and distinguishing feature weren't always flattering at all, in fact, quite the opposite (Fats was actually called "New York Fats" but he changed it after the film came out and traded on the more famous name). Sometimes it would be place/feature... Like "Jersey Red", "Cincinnati Kid", "Detroit Whitey", even Billy Incardona was know as "Pittsburgh Billy". These names would help road players keep out of trouble and so they became more specific to identification and even a bit less pleasant - names like Mike "The Mouth", "Low Down Dirty Red" or "Oil Can Larry" (I believe because of his excessive hair oil). In recent times pool names had died off a bit but to spice things up a bit Matchroom have given pool names to all the players in their more entertaining tournaments - that's how "The Maharajah" and "The Knight Rider" were named, and "The Kaiser" Souquet too I think. It was Matchroom that suggested the vote - a vote that I announced all over Europe in forums in Holland and Spain and France and Germany and Scotland and Ireland - heck, I even posted news of the vote in Norway - and for the first time ever loads of people have visited, voted and helped chose a player's name, and despite a worrying amount of spam voting to spoil poll, the clear leader from the start won through! "The Marksman" was definitely the people's choice out of the selected names - it wasn't my favourite, and apparently it's not Mark's either, and frankly there were so many options - more and more names were posted after the poll had started and even more on other forums too. Despite the fact that I'll probably look a bit silly if he goes with "The Granite" which wasn't even on the poll, I also understand it's a very personal thing and if it's his choice (and it is) and he'll have this name for a long, long time (so he better be happy with it) then I wouldn't want to tie him down... Although we'll probably still call him "The Marksman" here at Pro9 for a while! ----------------- Authorised Pro9 forum advertiser/sponsor

Well, admittedly it WAS organised in a bit of a rush just before he caught his flight for Dubai and I guess he's had more time to think about it.
If we all voted for you to get a blue car, but you changed your mind, are you still going to get a blue car?
Of course not, it's YOUR car after all!

I suggested to Mark 'Marmite' but he didn't like that either so i reckon we go with the 'Marksman' tag and if we stay with it crazycue and I, along with others, can convince him. And anyway it was a fair poll so he has to accept it.....dont you mark!!!!

Granite - sounds dull, still and boring.
I realise is about being a solid player, tough to beat, hard as nails etc. Actually it would be funny after 150 posts and suggestions Mark just goes with his own name.
But Big Dave has a point. It should be other players view of you that gives you your nickname, not what you call yourself - that's just wrong.

"Please welcome into the arena... It's The Marksman... Mark... Gray" Echo that! The pro9'ers have spoken and that should be the end of it. I'd be quite flattered if you lot spent several days thinking what to call me even if, as is very likely, I didn't like the outcome Mark had better start liking 'the marksman' it if he gets to a semi or final on GB9 [ This message was edited by: Riggers on 2008-04-23 13:38 ]

I understand Matchroom are fine with "Granite" so I guess that's that! Actually I think there IS a precedent for someone naming himself... I can't remember exactly but I remember reading that he was absolutely terrified of what dreadful name his mate Rudolf Wanderone was going to stick him with, so he pre-empted it and paid everyone to call him "Handsome" Larry Something or other for a while, and it did eventually stick!

True granite according to modern petrologic convention contains both plagioclase and alkali feldspars. When a granitoid is devoid or nearly devoid of plagioclase the rock is referred to as alkali granite. When a granitoid contains 10% orthoclase it is called tonalite; pyroxene and amphibole are common in tonalite. A granite containing both muscovite and biotite micas is called a binary or two-mica granite. Two-mica granites are typically high in potassium and low in plagioclase, and are usually S-type granites or A-type granites. The volcanic equivalent of plutonic granite is rhyolite. Which type would he be ? Just so we know !!!! [ This message was edited by: malaguista on 2008-04-24 06:57 ]
