Cueman, thanks for your reply it is good to know that I am not alone in questioning the payouts of this tournament.

As I said previously, personally I feel £200+ taken for the organiser was too much but my main problem is not the amount but more the fact that he didn't state his fee beforehand and clearly state the amount. You can see on earlier pages that I ask the question specifically but he doesn't answer it and one thing we all want in a tournament is upfront honesty...

Powerbreak, there is no law in place that restricts tournament organisers taking whatever they want as a fee so you are correct in a sense but I am sure the majority of poolplayers would agree that he should have stated what his 'fee' was long before the tournament started. If the fee was dependent on players that entered then he could have given a rough idea. More clarity and accountability was needed.

As for your line 'no one had to play', no they didn't but I can guarantee that the 40 spots would have been filled sooner and more people would have been interested in playing had a clear prize breakdown (based on 40 entrants paying £30 each) been published.

What are you talking about sour grapes?? I didn't even play in the event.

You are correct no one had to play but those wishing to enter are entitled to know the facts of the prize breakdown beforehand, and when something is advertised on the event poster you would certainly expect it to happen.

I too was interested in reading his wish to pay out 24 places if he got enough runners but in the end even though the event was oversubscribed he pays to last 8

Speaking to the man himself, I genuinelly liked him and don't think he was deliberately evasive. I think he thought 'I'd like to pay 24' but didn't think it through properly in relation to the payouts so ended up going for just 8 prizes. Even so though, it does lessen a player's confidence in a tournament when he makes statements such as the above and then goes against it so drastically, not even the middle ground of paying 16 was accomplished :-?

I have a picture of the poster which also says 'limited to 40 players'.....again, no big deal to me that 3 more players were allowed in but surely organisers should be careful writing stuff like this on a clear tournament poster and then going against it and allowing an excess to play.

I have tried to post, well-reasoned, polite posts....I am not here to attack anyone but just write polite suggestions. I have a keen interest in the development of pool and will soon be organising a very attractive tournament myself. In this tournament I feel clear, easily avoidable mistakes were made and just wanted them addressed. It seems I am not the only one who feels this way.

Also, Gareth Esprit is talented (I said that) but he is certainly not a megastar and I did nowhere say 'us lesser players would die to ave his looks talent wealth playboy image'.....so YOU said this, not I.

As for 'attacking' him, I haven't done this at all. I have merely posted about his antics in matches which I feel are unsporting and uncalled for and also his retirement in the quarter finals. Not that I think the money would be needed by him anyway but I sincerely hope he didn't get paid for reaching the quarters as what he did for whatever reason undermines the whole tournament and looks bad on the image of pool (even though it wasn't a big tournament he did it in).

I did write that it 'was a "mickey" take' as it was! The player who he beat in the last 16 can't have been happy seeing him get to the quarters and then chuck in the chance of winning.

Also, I am not 'attacking' Mr Billings. I have repeatedly stated that he was a genuinelly nice guy and personally, I liked him :-)

However, I am unhappy about the prize pool breakdown and his lack of clarity beforehand. You can see before the tournament I posted here and specifically enquired about Riley's fee and his but he wasn't forthcoming with a CLEAR answer...

Read his blog.

What is the address of his blog? I would be interested in reading it.

To be honest, how you define him or how he defines himself is of little importance to me.

In my opinion based on achievements he is neither a pool sensation nor a megastar. Sure he has some talent but doesn't have true confidence in his game hence the unsportsmanlike tactics, boasting about his ability etc. On the UK and world scenes he is not near the top at all and that is a fact.

As I say though, I wish ill fortune on nobody and it is sad that he resorts to low tactics instead of really improving his game and getting some confidence.

As for being on a par with Efren or Busta, don't be ridiculous, so many players are great 'on their day' the trouble is 'their day' is so less frequent than the top players. Work hard and harness your talent and those days can be more plentiful in reality rather than in your own head.

Anyway, darkside is not the main issue of this thread so please create a separate topic if you want to talk about him, he would like that as his results and tournament record are of so little quality to shout about which is why he has to use his mouth and tactics to get some focus on him.

Regarding payouts it was a surprise it went from 24 to 8. But if you consider the last 8 got £40 and last 4 got £80. You start to realise if you paid to the last 24 you would have won a Fiver!!

Also there was £90-100 in the plate comp too. So The money all seems to add up. I'm sure Chris will have his say on the matter.

£300 x 1, £150 x 1, £80 x 2, £40 x 4 + £100 plate = £870

£30 x 43 entries = £1290

£1290 - £870 = £420 short

I think we just need to wait for Chris to come online...otherwise, until we have the EXACT figures, where the money went etc...this is all just speculation.

I am glad others are voicing their concerns now as when I asked a few questions before the tournament I seemed to receive a bit of hostility from Mr Billings and other posters!

Also Tupaki, I went to the tournament and a couple of us got the figures from the horse's mouth so to speak, we did a quick adding up of all the prizes and were surprised when it didn't reach £1000 at least.

In any case, this should all have been established beforehand. The organiser should answer all questions directed to him and should clearly state his and the club's fee so everyone knows where they stand.

Don't get me wrong, I totally agreed with you when you and CoolHandLuke were asking for at least a rough guideline for the prize breakdown based on 40 entrants paying £30 before the start of the tourney. I was surprised when you, as you say, received "hostility" from other members for questioning Chris. I didn't say anything at the time as I was not playing in the tourney and therefore didn't see it as my place to mention anything.

I just feel that before we jump to any conclusions, it may be better to just wait and see what Chris has to say. You may be forgetting a vital piece of information in your calculations (I know it seems doubtful as you believe you have accounted for everything...however, it is still possible). I'm not trying to imply that you have made clear mistakes in your assumptions...and I hope you don't take this in that way. I just feel it may be best to hear from Chris before we jump to any conclusions, that is all.

Just popped in - all this is a great read.
Very entertaining.
looking forward to hearing Chris's breakdown - theres a few people here not doing his reputation any good whatsoever.

Played in his tournaments before - never had any issues whatsoever.

look forward to him coming online and putting it all to rest....

As for DCI Whiteside - AKA - Darkside
Legend! - a wind up king of kings -
conceding in the Quarter Final - if im his opponent i aint complaining, so why should anyone else - his perogative.
If people want to bite everytime he fishes - whos fault is that!? lol - I know who the fools are, and it aint DS! lol

Shotgun - Life s.ucks sometimes, thats just the way it is!
;)
bit like Malibu - "Seriously easy going"... aaahhhhh
