Battle of the US Open Champions, Appleton vs. Immonen - head to head, who do you think will win, and by how much?

Race to 13 Dave, but if scores are level at 9-9, 10-10, 11-11 or 12-12 the match automatically moves to hill-hill.

Mika told me they haven't spoken about any personal money on this yet... Strictly speaking it's an exhibition match as they are both getting paid, with the winner getting extra... But you don't win those US Open tournaments without being ultra-competitive, so I'm sure we'll hear there's a few quid on the side as well.

So MartinBullet, you're saying if it's 9-9 then next rack decides the winner??? Why would they do that?

Maybe to keep some control over the time if its an exhibition.

I think Riggers must have the answer there... It's the only thing that makes any sense.

I'm thinkin Daz will win 13-8. Tony's right, Mika is awesome, but I'd back Daz every time.

I've finally gotten around to reading the "Arena Rules for Ten Ball" - they are as follows...

----------------------------------------------QUOTE----------------------------------------------

ARENA RULES for 10-BALL

* The player who is at the table after the break shot has the option to push out or have his opponent push out. (This assures that both players play each rack. Each player begins on a near equal par.) After a scratch on the break, the incoming player may have “ball in hand” behind the headstring or may give his opponent “ball in hand” behind the headstring.

* Sudden-Sudden Death. In a race to thirteen, when the score is tied at nine, ten, eleven, or twelve, the next rack will determine the winner. (The most exciting game by far for viewers is when the match is tied with one deciding game left. By the time both players are tied at nine or later, they both shot every game, thus having enough chances by then to decide a winner. The result is more hill-hill matches for the viewers.)

* When the 10-ball is the last ball on the table and a player scratches or fouls while playing the 10-ball, the 10-ball is spotted, and his opponent has “ball in hand” behind the headstring. (Where has the spot shot gone? It’s back! It’s more entertaining for the viewer to watch another “sweat shot” than to rack them up.)

* Jump cues and extensions are not allowed. (Tradition has its place here. The mechanical bridge can be used.)

* The “Magic Ball Rack” will be used. (It is PAINFUL for the viewers to watch players rack balls for minutes. The Magic Ball Rack takes seconds.)

* Three “30-Second” Shot Clocks are displayed in the arena.

During the first shot of any inning or during the shot after the break shot, a 30-second countdown will begin as soon as the player addresses the pool table. After pocketing the first ball of a run, a 30-second countdown will begin when all balls stop rolling. As long as the player is addressing the cue ball when the countdown gets to 00, he may relax and shoot when ready. If, after the countdown gets to 00, that player stops addressing the cue ball, a foul will be called. If the mechanical bridge is needed, the clock will be paused so the bridge can be accessed. (Sorry, but the game is too boring for the viewer. How long does it take for a complete football team to prepare for the next play?)

What do you think?

Doh, yeah, I've just been told that by someone else too... I've subtracted instead of added... I hate world time... There should be one global time, and time is time, say it were London time that was the standard, then people in New York would go to work at dawn around 1pm - it works fine for the seasons! I can't see any problem with that?

Come the revolution and I come to power it will all change! Sorry folks! Updating article now.

I think all matches in the new Accu-Stats Arena are being played to the Accu-Stats Arena rules. This is just another Accu-Stats Arena match, "It will be the first of many in the "Arena Rules" DVD Collection" and therefore their rules apply, but promoters have found an interesting factoid on which to hang the marketing - and it should be a good draw... That's quite some achievement.

In general, what do you think of the "push-out after every break" rule?

These rules requires the player at the table after the break to make a decision. He must push out or force his opponent to push out. This forces both players to play every rack at nearly a dead even start.

I'm sure i heard a fact on one of Jim Wyach's commentary's that the player who gets the option after the push out is 75% to win that rack.

Not sure how true that is but doesn't really make it a dead start :)

I dont like the rule anyway

So no matter how many balls you make off the break you have to push or force to push? You can't just break and dish?

I quite like it...probably be the first match in a long time that a pro can't blame the break or the rack for losing.
