FOUR WORLD CHAMPIONS SET TO CLASH IN THE 2024 US OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINALS

World champions Shane Van Boening, Fedor Gorst, Joshua Filler, and Niels Feijen are set to battle it out in the 2024 US Open Championship semi-finals, with Van Boening inching closer to a historic sixth title.

The 47th edition of this prestigious event returns to Harrah’s Resort for the fourth consecutive year, in partnership with Caesars Entertainment, the Atlantic City Sports Commission, and broadcasters Sky Sports and DAZN.

LIVE SCORES/BRACKETS

In his quest to make history, Shane Van Boening faced off against Hanoi Open champion Jayson Shaw in the Last 16. The match was tightly contested, with both players exchanging racks early on as they vied for the lead. However, a dry break from Shaw gave Van Boening the opening he needed, allowing him to run the racks and reach the hill. Although a foul from Van Boening offered Shaw a glimmer of hope, another dry break from the Brit enabled The South Dakota Kid to clear the table and secure a 10-5 victory.

Van Boening then clashed with Ukrainian underdog Vitaliy Patsura, who put up a formidable challenge in another tightly contested match. Patsura’s scratch on the break in rack twelve, followed by a golden break from Van Boening in rack fourteen, helped the American steal the lead and reach the hill. An intense safety battle on the 1-ball ensued, which Van Boening initially won, only to falter at the 8-ball. However, a dry break from Patsura in the following rack allowed Van Boening to capitalise and close out the match with a narrow 10-7 triumph.

Current World Champion Fedor Gorst squared off against Mosconi Cup teammate Skyler Woodward, in a rematch of their Last 16 encounter at the European Open. Gorst stormed to an early 5-0 lead, motivated by a fortunate 2-9 fluke, and eventually reached the hill at 9-5. Despite a failed cut on the 9-ball that gave Woodward a chance to mount a comeback, a dry break in the fifteenth rack sealed Woodward’s fate, allowing Gorst to advance to the quarterfinals.

In the quarters, Gorst faced Jefrey Roda, who had previously knocked out fellow Filipino Johann Chua. Gorst once again surged to a 5-0 lead, driven by his exceptional safety play, and further extended his advantage with another lucky carom on the 9-ball, to make it 8-1. Although Roda rallied to take four racks, a scratch on the break handed Gorst the opportunity he needed to close out the match and secure his place in the semi-finals.

Another Mosconi Cup showdown took place in the quarterfinals as former Team Europe stars Joshua Filler and David Alcaide faced off following their Last 16 victories over Marc Bijsterbosch and Michael Baoanan, respectively. Filler, the 2017 World Champion, quickly asserted his dominance, delivering a vicious 10-3 win over ‘El Matador’ Alcaide to book his spot in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Ko Pin Yi continued his impressive form from the previous round, ending Albin Ouschan’s hopes of a first US Open title with a convincing 10-4 victory to advance to the quarterfinals. However, Ko’s momentum came to a halt against 2014 World Champion Niels Feijen. With the match tied at 4-4, Ko’s missed 6-ball proved costly, as ‘The Terminator’ Feijen seized the opportunity to run out the racks, eliminating the last remaining Ko brother and securing his place in the semi-finals.

The semi-final take place tomorrow with Fedor Gorst vs Niels Feijen to kick off the day at 10 am EDT/3 pm BST UK time.
