KO PING CHUNG CONTINUES TITLE DEFENCE INTO LAST 64 OF THE 2024 US OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Defending champion Ko Ping Chung advances into to the Last 64 of the 2024 US Open Championship, joining the five-time US Open champion Shane Van Boening, as well as elite players Fedor Gorst, Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, Joshua Filler, Jayson Shaw, and Ko Pin Yi.

This year marks the 47th edition of the prestigious US Open Championship, returning to Harrah’s Resort for the fourth consecutive year in partnership with Caesars Entertainment and the Atlantic City Sports Commission, along with renowned broadcasters Sky Sports and DAZN.

The reigning champion Ko Ping Chung confidently secured his place in the Last 64 by besting Fitim Haradinaj 9-4, while his brother, Ko Pin Yi, also advanced smoothly, overcoming Toh Lian Han with a 9-3 victory.

Shane Van Boening’s pursuit of a sixth US Open title gained significant momentum after his triumphs on both days two and three to enter the Last 64. Thanks to his precise execution of safety shots in his match against Imran Majid, the South Dakota Kid established an early 3-0 lead, which he maintained to ultimately seal a 9-5 victory.

Meanwhile, four former US Open champions—Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, Joshua Filler, Jayson Shaw, and Carlo Biado—faced unexpected hurdles in their race to the next stage, all suffering defeats in their opening matches. However, each found redemption in the Losers’ Qualification round, with ‘Eagle Eye’ Shaw leading the charge, stopping Hunter Lombardo 9-7.

Carlo Biado followed Shaw’s example, rebounding impressively with a dominant 9-1 win over Jerry Arvelaez. Filler, true to his nickname ‘The Killer,’ unleashed a fierce performance, whitewashing Jeremy Sossei 9-0 to join former World Champion Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, who bounced back with a 9-5 victory over Georgi Georgiev in his second match.

World Champion and WNT No.1 Fedor Gorst also encountered difficulties in his opening match, falling short to Ukrainian Vitaliy Patsura 9-4. Nevertheless, Gorst quickly rectified his earlier performance, delivering a solid 9-6 win against American Payne McBride, to continue his quest for his first US Open Championship title.

Max Lechner cruised into the Last 64 stage with a decisive 9-2 triumph over American Donny Mills. Unfortunately, his World Cup of Pool partner, Albin Ouschan, did not enjoy the same success, suffering a 9-2 defeat to Canadian Alex Pagulayan. However, Ouschan rebounded alongside fellow Austrian Mario He, as both secured victories in their final matches against Luong Duc Thien and Toh Lian Han, respectively.

Earl Strickland’s mission for a sixth title came to a disappointing conclusion as he fell to Filipino Marvin Asis 8-5 in the Losers’ Qualification round. He was joined in early exit by Mieszko Fortunski, Tyler Styer, Darren Appleton, and Billy Thorpe on day three.

Live rack-by-rack scoring will be available throughout the event at www.wntlivescores.com.
