Feijen wins Dynamic Billard Austrian Open over Filler

In a high class quality final match, Niels Feijen (NED) defeated Joshua Filler (GER) with 9:7 in the final match of the Dynamic Billard Austrian Open.

The writing was on the wall that this match would be a thriller. And the many spectators in the venue and on the computer screens were not disappointed. To the contrary. The final contained everything one could wish for. The first racks were close to perfect. Both players hardly made any mistakes and after nine racks the scoreboard displayed a small advantage for Feijen with 5:4. Then Filler made a mistake when he attempted a safety on the 2-ball when Feijen played a push-out instead of handing the situation back to Feijen. He left an open table for Feijen and „The Terminator“ ran out, taking a 6:4 lead over Filler.

Feijen could continue with this strong performance and after 13 racks, he was on the hill leading 8:5. He attempted a shot on the 3-ball but he missed it. Filler got back to the table and took that rack with some luck. In the flow of the match, Filler pulled back some racks from Feijen and the situation got to 8:7 in favor of Feijen. The Dutch had broken the match and it was clear that if he lost this rack, the match would have been 8:8 with Filler to break. Feijen did not want to see that happen. At 8:7, Feijen had some balls down and the 2-ball was the ball on. But it was blocked. Feijen could not play it. So he went for a push-out and put the cue ball against the side rail. Filler went for a safety shot and played it very well. Feijen needed to play a jump shot and hit the 2-ball with the cue ball rolling into a safe position. That was a lucky outcome for Feijen. Filler attempted another safety on the 2-ball but failed. He left an open table for Feijen who cleared the slate and won the match with 9:7.

DAY 2

Filler trounced Ortmann in a clash of the generations

Joshua Filler (GER) powered past former World Champion Oliver Ortmann (GER) 9:2 in the second winner’s round of the Dynamic Billard Austrian Open.

The match between the two Germans was really a clash between the generations. On one side Ortmann with all his victories and merits in the past, always to be considered a tough opponent. In the other corner Joshua Filler, young gun on fire who just became third in an international straight pool event in New York, USA. The match was expected a close fight. But it turned out to be everything else but that. To the contrary, Filler started out like a hurricane and played marvelous pool. His break shot was there and he made no mistakes in the early stage of the match. Ortmann’s disadvantage was that his break was not there and Filler punished him for that without mercy. In all fairness, it must also be stated here that Filler did have Lady Luck on his side in the match. However, after seven racks the scoreboard displayed an unbelievable score of 7:0 for Filler! Then, the young German missed an 8-ball. Ortmann came to the table with the 8-ball and the 9-ball on the slate. But he misse d the 9-ball. Obviously, his concentration was broken by Filler’s performance so far. At 0:8, Ortmann took two racks in order to come back a bit. But then Filler closed the book on the match, winning the 11th rack and the match with 9:2 over Ortmann. „I know Oliver is a world class player“, stated Filler, „but today I played better and I also had the necessary luck on my side. That’s 9-ball, I guess“, added Filler.

Other remarkable results from the winner’s qualification round include Daryl Peach (GBR) defeating Nick van den Berg (NED) by a whisker with 9:8. „Napoleon“ Marcus Chamat (SWE) got the better of Ralph Eckert (GER) 9:8.

Current World nr.1 ranked player Albin Ouschan (AUT), who lost yesterday his opening match to Nick Malai (GRE), is still alive in the event. Today, he took down Jakub Sawicki (POL) 9:5, then Wojciech Sroczynski (POL) 9:5 and Roman Hybler (CZE) 9:5. He then got a revenge match against Nick Malai. This time, Ouschan remained victorious with a clear result of 9:4 which takes him into the single elimination round of the final 32 players of the Dynamic Billard Austrian Open.

Florian Hammer (GER) who became third at the last event in Banal, Germany, lost his loser’s qualification round match to Christian Sparrenloev-Fischer (SWE) 8:9. Ivo Aarts (NED) ousted David Alcaide (ESP) in the same round with 9:3. Casper Matikainen (FIN) eliminated Germany’s Ralph Eckert with 9:4 from the event.

The action will continue tomorrow at 09:00 with the matches of the last 32 players single elimination.

DAY 1

Nick Malai sends Ouschan to the loser’s side

Nick Malai (GRE) defeated Austrian top player Albin Ouschan (AUT) with 9:6 in the first winner’s round of the Dynamic Billard Austrian Open.

There seems to be a curse on Austrian players here in St. Johann. The tournament is held here for the 5th time and never has an Austrian player been able to win the open event. This year, things were looking prosperous for Albin Ouschan. He came here as nr.1 World ranked player. But he could not find his game at all. To the contrary, he played a lot of bad shots, committed fouls, missed easy balls and played bad safety shots. Ouschan seemed to be disgusted with his own performance. Malai capitalized for that. He also started out with some mistakes but then he got momentum since Ouschan left him too many chances.

It all started in rack two when Malai missed an easy 8-ball and left it there for Ouschan. The Austrian pocketed the 8-ball and then missed the 9-ball. It can hardly be told when Ouschan missed so many shots the last time. After a while, Malai got going and his break started to work better. Whatever Ouschan did, he could not get into his own rhythm. Being in the lead 7:3, Malai tried to take the shortcut on the hill and attempted a combination shot on the 9-ball. He failed and gave the table to Ouschan. The Austrian ran the rack and the crowd was hoping for him to start a comeback. But already in the next rack, Ouschan missed another easy shot to give the table to Malai who went on the hill with 8:4. Then, Malai missed an 8-ball and Ouschan managed to pull two racks back from Malai. However, one could tell by the body language of Ouschan that he had almost given up on himself. At 6:8, Malai took the final point and won the match with 9:6. „I have really benefitted from my opponent’s mistakes“, stated Malai after the match, „the match was not good but I handled the situation better.“ „Luck was also a factor in this match, but I think in the end my break worked better and that’s why I won the match in the end“, Malai added.

Other remarkable results include Marek Kudlik (POL) defeating Karl Boyes (GBR) in the first winner’s round 9:3. Daniel Tangudd (SWE), member of Team Europe at the recent Atlantic Challenge Cup, won his two matches of the day 9:8 over Mats Schjetne (NOR) and 9:2 over Sebastian Batkowski (POL). Petri Makkonen (FIN) took down Karlo Dalmatin (CRO) 9:7.

The current nr.1 ranked player of the Euro-Tour, Niels „The Terminator“ Feijen (NED) easily won his first appearance at the Dynamic Billard Austrian Open 2015 with a 9:4 victory over Damian Adamus (POL). BCA Hall of Famer Ralf Souquet (GER) also marched on into the second winner’s round by smashing Salah Ziyaei (UAE) 9:2.

The action will continue tomorrow at 09:00 with the matches of the second loser’s round.

35 different nations are represented in the Dynamic Billard Austrian Open. The biggest contingency has Germany with 35 players followed by Poland with 28 players and Austria with 25 players. Out of the 234 athletes, 8 female are in the field.
