Kimberley takes British Open as BWPPA 2012 tour concludes

The concluding tour stop of Europe’s largest wheelchair pool tour, the BWPPA Dynamic Billiards tour was held at Barnsley with the British Open Wheelchair 9-ball Championship, which attracted a small but strong field, the players were given handicapped starts to reflect both their playing ability and current tour ranking. This was the final event for some of the tours players before heading off to the World 9 Ball Championships in Germany from 4-8 December; see www.wpapoolonline.com for more details of that event.

The best performance in the early rounds came from BWPPA stalwart Matt Lester, who although had a 2 start still took the match against Shaun Madin to a hill-hill finish before succumbing to a 8-9 defeat. Then in his losers qualifier, after many years of trying, he won his maiden tour match, beating Andy Johnson 7-5 with a 2 rack start, this took Lester to his first semi-final and first time in the main prize money.

THE SEMI-FINALS

The first semi-final between Roy Kimberley and Matt Lester, started in the fashion most people would have expected, with Kimberley quickly hauling back Lester’s 5 rack start, but then things changed, and at 8-7 to Kimberley, Lester had a chance to take the match to hill-hill, but it was not to be as the UK #1 booked his place in the final with an 9-7 win.

The second semi-final was between Tony Southern (giving 2 rack start), winner of 2 events in 2012, and Shaun Madin. Southern came out of the blocks and led 8-4, but then the match changed, Madin pulled back rack after rack, and at 8-7 Southern missed a simple 9 ball to win the match, and Madin potted what seemed like a impossible cut down the short rail to take the match to double hill, and then as Southern crumpled under the pressure, Madin held his nerve and booked a place in the final.

In the final Madin (with a 2 start) was 6-4 up and flying, but that was as good as it got, as Kimberley reeled off rack after rack, and took the final 9-6.

Everyone again enjoyed the venue and the hospitality offered by George Vetters, the manager at Riley’s Barnsley and his staff, we are always made welcome.

SEASON REVIEW

Well done to Roy Kimberley for maintaining his no 1 ranking in 2012, and winning 2 ranking events (events 4 and 5) and the end of season open event.

Tony Southern is at no 2 despite finishing on the same points as Kimberley, following his wins at event 2 and 4.

We have had some new players this year and hope to continue this trend and see the return of a few old faces next year.
Well done as well to Danny Luton and Phil Hendrickson, who sit at no 3 and 4 in the rankings, after both reaching 2 main event finals.

Congratulations also to Ireland’s Fred Dinsmore for making the trip across the sea for 3 events and winning the first event of the season in February.

The 2013 BWPPA tour is scheduled to commence in March 2012 at a venue to be decided. The tour is in discussions with Stoke Mandeville to establish a permanent base there, but this is unlikely to be ready for the start of the season, so hopefully we will be still using some of the Riley’s clubs.

Best of luck to the BWPPA Team of Roy Kimberley, Tony Southern, Danny Luton and Matt Duffy in the world Championships.
