Kimberley regains the no 1 spot in the rankings

Riley’s Wavertree was the venue for the Annual British Wheelchair 9-ball Pool Championship on the 20/21st October 2012.

Roy “The Sandman” Kimberley regained the top spot on the tour from Tony Southern, as he wins his second event in a row on the BWPPA tour. Kimberley went into the event knowing that only a win could get him back to the no 1 spot, and as long as Southern didn’t make the final.

Kimberley got his campaign off to great start with a 7-0 win over Scotland’s Graham McClounnan. Roy’s next win was less convincing with a 7-5 win over Craig Welsh in which he was behind for a long while. It was another difficult match for Kimberley in the next round as this time he faced high ranked Phil Hendrickson, and it was Hendrickson who flew through the match with a 7-2 win to advance to the semi final.
This took Kimberley through to the loser’s bracket where he met Matt Duffy. This was a great match with both players playing some good pool, however it was Kimberley who advanced into the semi-final with a 7-5 score line.

In the other half of the draw, Dinsmore beat Southern 7-5 to advance to a semi-final against Kimberley, and sent Southern to the losers bracket, where after dispatching Gary Swift 7-5, he the came up against Hendrickson in the other semi-final, knowing a win would guarantee him top spot.

In a classic match which saw 6 break and runs in the first 7 racks (inc 4 from Southern and 2 from Hendrickson), it went all the way to a hill-hill finish, but it was Southern who blinked first, missing a makeable chance to take the match but it was Hendrickson who kept his nerve to pot the last 4 balls to run out a 7-6 winner, booking his place in the final, and punching the air in triumph.

In the other semi-final Kimberley met with old foe Fred Dinsmore from Ireland. Kimberley was much more like his normal self in this match as he totally outplayed Dinsmore to claim his place in the final with a 7-3 win.

Hendrickson and Kimberley were to meet in the British Wheelchair 9-ball Championship final and it was a repeat of the 10-ball final in Cardiff, and almost as one sided. Hendrickson had chances throughout the match to get closer to claiming his first BWPPA title in his 3rd final, but it was not to be as Kimberley played very well to take the title with a 7-3 victory.

Southern and Kimberley finished the season joint top on 360 ranking points, but Kimberley takes the top spot by virtue of this win.

After the final Kimberley said of his win “I would like to thank all the staff at Riley's Wavertree they made us feel really welcome as always, also thanks to the tournament director Al John. On a personal note obviously I'm chuffed to be back to no.1 but also winning a Predator cue worth over £900 kindly provided by our friends at Predator. I'd also like to congratulate Tony Southern, Danny Luton and Phil Hendrickson for making this years title race the closest ever going right down to the final day and final match. In addition to thanking Predator, I would like to also thank all the other sponsors of the tour, Gentlemen’s Night Out, Simonis Cloths, Riley’s Pool Clubs, Talisman Cases, AB Wallace Trophies, Kamui Tips and Dynamic Billiards.

The Challenge Cup final was won by Shaun Madin who beat John Greensmith, but it was Greensmith who took the overall 2012 challenge top spot and with it the ‘Sneaky Pete’ cue from tour sponsors predator cues.

Tony Southern also won a ‘Sneaky Pete’ cue for his final ranking position.

Danny Luton won a personalised Talisman Case for finishing 3rd.

Phil Hendrickson and Gary Swift each won a Predator Case for their 4th and 5th place in the rankings.

A partial video of the main event final is available here, (there were technical issues preventing a full recording) pictures of the event will be here in the BWPPA gallery soon.

The final event is the Dynamic British 9 Ball Open (Handicapped Event), which will be held at Rileys Barnsley, on the weekend of 17th/18th November 2012.
