Lawrenson "continuously" heads "straight" for the gold in 14.1!

He was tipped for the top when he had a major result at the previous BPPPA tournament, but surely Matt Lawrenson has exceeded all expectations, entering the record books by winning the 14.1 Continuous "Straight" Pool discipline at the 2006 European Youth Championships.

This is the first time a junior from Great Britain has EVER won a Gold Medal at the European Championships and marks a new milestone for the sport in this country.

Lawrenson, from Wigan, has had a terrific year already. In May he won the 2006 BPPPA British Junior 9-Ball Championship with an 11-3 win over European Championships team-mate Tony Burton (both securing their tickets to Kiev in the process).

Another highlight of Lawrenson's year, and something that must have given his confidence a real boost, was his tremendous win at the BPPPA's recent Stafford Open. Challenging himself on the men's main 9-ball tour, Matt met Martinho Correia, a former top 16 ranked player on the tour, and to everyone's surprise, soundly beat him with a stunning 9-3 score, and ultimately finishing in the top 16 of a major tour event.

Play continues today and all players will individually participate in the American disciplines of 8 Ball and 9 Ball. The Team event will consist of 8 Ball, 9 Ball and 14:1 Continuous (Straight pool).
