Darren Appleton is the 74th World Tournament of 14.1 Champion

England's Darren Appleton capped off an amazing week of pool action by finishing off strong to capture his first ever World 14.1 title ! Appleton had lost in the finals last year, but sweetly rectified that with a resounding victory over America's #1 ranked Shane Van Boening. The Andy Cloth 74th World Tournament of 14.1 6 days of grueling pool stamina battles ended with spectacular performances by the world's greatest professionals.

The ANDY CLOTH World Tournament took place on August 4th-9th, 2014. Dragon Promotions and Dr. Michael Fedak were pleased to bring the 74th production of the oldest billiard event in the world . Also sponsored by Andy Cloth, Kamui Brands, OB Cues, Amsterdam Billiard Club, Realrealcool.com, Pool & Billiard Magazine , Aramith Balls, and George Beckman Kinetic Sculptures. Official patron 14.1 aficionados are Stu Mattana, Tom Gleich, Harold Siegel, Dr. Greg Diehl Plastic Surgery, and Official World 14.1 photographer Charles Eames. A star studded field has made it back once again to the 14.1 extravaganza taking place at Steinway Billiards Cafe, who is once more hosting the world's greatest straight pool championship.

The Total9Ball Open Weekender Festival of Pool

Today is the day where T9B announces our first Open Weekender Event. Players of all standards are invited to join us for an event that will run through Saturday and Sunday. Mark Parker and myself Phil Wildman have worked very hard to put a weekend package together rammed full of events to encourage players of all standards to come and compete in the sport we love, there really is something for everyone.

Below is a list of events that will take place over the weekend and a brief description for each:

The Main Event – 9ball event, Double elimination played to the last 32/16 depending on entries. Matches race to 9 with no handicaps.

The Shark Shield – 10ball Event Open to players rated -5 to -1 ability. Straight Knockout. No handicaps. Matches race to 8 racks

The Minnows Medal – 10 ball event open to players rated 0 to +3. One/two rack handicap will be awarded where needed to keep things fair. Match races to 7, There will be no big fish in the small pond!

Blind Scotch Doubles – 9ball event, straight knockout event, players are drawn before each round therefore you will have a different partner in each round. Its random anyone can win

One Important rack. – 9ball one rack shootout. Straight knock-out until the last 8/16 (depending on numbers) at which point the event becomes a last man standing event all names in a bag. Draw who will be unlucky… the first drawn will have to beat the remaining field to cash. The last drawn will have to just win one rack to scoop the cash. It’s like a Royal Rumble of pool

The Break Dish – This is a separate event tickets will be on sale its £5 for three tickets or £10 for 10 tickets. Buy as many as you like to increase your chances of getting drawn. Each ball is given a value and there is a bonus for the clearance. After each shoot its decision time! stop and collect or carry on. Players will continue getting draw until the pot is small at that point the pot will be added to the events.

Thanks to Dynamic Billard for sponsoring this event.

Pro9 Photo Blitz from the 2014 GB9 Southern Masters

While the talented writers at GB9 are knocking up the full tournament report for the official press release, we've got time to show a less formal selection of photos from the event, to give a taste of what the action was like.

I always have a lot of fun at these events - and this one was no exception - I particularly enjoyed running a little 15-Ball Rotation challenge on The Pro Shop's demo table. There will be more details of the results from that in the forums later (when I've had a little sleep) but for now, I hope you enjoy these few photos.

China 2 captures the 2014 World Pool Team Championship with a spirited 4-2 win over the Philippines

With an eye on making history, and another on wanting to please the legions of their fellow countrymen and women, the China II team won the 2014 WPA World Pool Team Championship today in Beijing, defeating a less than sharp Philippine team, 4-2.

The match remained tight down to the very last 10-ball match, and if not for a few mistakes by the never-say-die Filipinos, could have gone the other way. In reality, however, China played better pool, was more focused, and walked out of the Tongzhou Luhe High School arena a worthy champion.

For China, the win marks a milestone in Chinese billiard history, as it represents its biggest ever world title in American pool.(China twice won the scotch doubles World Cup of Pool.) 40 years ago pool was still considered a decadent bourgeois pastime here. But since China has opened up to the outside world, tens of millions of people from all walks of life have taken to the game. The government, which enthusiastically backs all Olympic sports—of which pool is one--, has promoted and financed the professional game, developed talent and funded some of the biggest tournaments in the world. Today in Beijing that investment paid off handsomely.

The win by the China 2 squad, which featured Liu Haitao, Dang Ching Hu, Wang Can, Fu Xiaofang, and Liu Shasha also meant a bit of revenge for China, as the Philippines had decimated the China 1 squad in the semi-finals on Friday, 4-0.

Because they had played so well in the semis, and indeed all week, the result was a bitter disappointment for the Philippines. The team, comprised of greats Dennis Orcollo, Lee Vann Corteza, Carlo Biado and Rubilen Amit, outlasted defending champions Taiwan in a classic thriller in the quarterfinals. And their semis performance against the China 1 squad was downright breathtaking. But in the final, the Pinoys let too many mistakes creep into their game. And the Chinese, who were remarkably focused and calm despite the pressure of playing at home, punished them each and every time.

Pinoys on fire as they quash China 1, while China 2 squeaks by Japan as showdown looms in Beijing on Saturday

One team took the easy road. The other had to claw tooth and nail and barely made it through. But when they meet tomorrow in the finals of the 2014 World Pool Team Championship in Beijing, the Philippines and China 2 are sure to engage in a knockdown, drag out struggle for team supremacy in professional pool.

After six days of non-stop 8-ball, 9-ball and 10 ball, featuring 25 teams from across the globe, fans and organizers really couldn’t have asked for a better final. On the one hand you have the Philippines, arguably the finest pool playing country the world over. The Philippine team, comprised of pool heavyweights Dennis Orcollo, Lee Vann Corteza, Carlo Biado and Rubilen Amit, have been literally on fire this week and are playing without a care in the world.

On the other hand there’s China 2, representing the world’s most populous nation and whose government backed sports program has one goal firmly in mind; to be the best. The fact that the final will be held in the very heart of China’s capital probably puts much of the onus and pressure for victory on the shoulders of the Chinese players. But the way they won their semi-final battle against Japan today may have provided China with just the battle hardening gut check they needed to see them through on the last day.

The final, which will take place Saturday at the Tongzhou Luhe high school, will begin at 2PM Beijing time (GMT +8 ).

Both China sides lead the way into the Final 16 at the 2014 World Pool Team Championship in Beijing

Now, the fun begins.

After three days of round robin group play, in which 25 teams from all over the globe dueled in a veritable cavalcade of 8-ball, 9-ball and 10-ball, the 2014 World Pool Team Championship has been whittled down to the Final 16.

All matches from here through Saturday will be single elimination, and you can bet your last Chinese Yuan that the tension and drama levels inside the Tongzhou Lhue High School arena in Beijing will be thick and hot. For not only are the teams playing for $300,000 in prize money-with $80,000 going to the winning side— they are also competing for national pride. There’s something about wearing your country’s flag and having the backing and support of your fellow countrymen and teammates that takes this sport to a whole other dimension.

Leading the way in terms of support will be both China sides, both of whom completely waltzed through their group unscathed all week. But while the Chinese squads are certainly formidable on paper, they both have had absolutely no competition in their groups.

Each China side had what could be considered the easiest draws in the event. Now, however, that will all change. And while China 1—with Li He Wen, Wu Jiaqing, Chu Bing Chia, Han Yu, and Chen Siming-- and China 2—with Liu Haitao, Dang Ching Hu, Wang Can, Fu Xiaofang, and Liu Shasha-- will probably advance at least to the quarters and perhaps further, it all comes with a caveat that other teams won’t have to deal with. The pressure from the home fans placed on both China teams will be massive.

Official Preview: 2014 GB9 Southern Masters

The penultimate round of this season’s GB 9 Ball Tour hits town this weekend as the Southern Masters is contested at the Daventry Court Hotel in Northamptonshire.

As the 7th GB9 season draws ever closer to its climax, the fourth event of 2014 brings together once again some of the country’s finest cueists as they lock horns to see who will take home the next major British title. Having already gone past the halfway stage of this 2014 season, it’s fair to say that the dominance of Phil Burford and Mark Gray at the top of the rankings will take quite some stopping at this event. With 3rd placed Daryl Peach flying the flag for Great Britain at the WPA World Team Championship alongside Karl Boyes, Chris Melling and Allison Fisher, it will take nothing short of a tournament win for any of the chasing pack to close that gap. With some of the country’s leading amateur’s at the head of that pack including reigning Midlands Classic champion Chris Hall, Michael Rhodes, Craig Osborne and Darryn Walker, all of the top players will have to be on their toes. It remains to see whether any of those four, or any of the other exciting amateurs in the field, can stop Burford and Gray on their quest for yet more silverware.

The magnificent Daventry Court Hotel will host its 14th GB9 event to date, a run which stretches all the way back to the 2010 British Grand Prix. It has proven itself over the years to be a very popular venue with players, officials and all those involved with the GB 9 Ball Tour. The tour is also due to close the season out at the hotel with this year’s British Grand Prix between November 7th and 9th. We are sure that this event will be as smooth and enjoyable as those previous, and GB9 would like to extend its thanks and gratitude to the hotel and its staff for their tireless work to date in making tour events so memorable.

Ina Kaplan proves to be the perfect team player as she helps seal Germany's hard fought win against Austria on Day 2 at the 2014 World Pool Team Championship in Beijing

Ina Kaplan doesn’t have the big time experience, the world titles, nor the time logged in under the pressurized glare of the TV spotlights that some of the greats of the women’s game have. But the 27 year old from Siegen, Germany can, when she’s on her game, certainly hold her own on the pool table against any opponent. Her Euro tour win in late 2013 and her runner up finish in this year’s European Championships attest to some solid cueing talent.

Playing for Team Germany this week in the 2014 World Pool Team Championship here in Beijing alongside greats Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann, and fellow teammate Sebastian Staab, Kaplan would best be described as a role player. You don’t count on her to regularly whip the likes of Fu Xiaofang, Liu Shasha, Allison Fisher, Han Yu or Ga Young Kim. You need Kaplan to come through for the team where and when she can. And that’s exactly what she did on Day 2 today for Germany.

For their first match in the group stages of this year’s World Team Championship, Germany found themselves against one of the event’s toughest squads, Austria. Group C is pool’s equivalent of the “Group of Death,” with Germany, Austria and Great Britain all fighting to advance to the knockout stage. A win early on was vital for both team’s chances.

Dinsmore pops across the Irish Sea to take the British 10-Ball title

he BWPPA held its 3rd event of the 2014 season on the 19th/20th July with the Talisman British 10-ball Championships held at the BWPPA/BWCSA Wheelchair Cue Sport Academy at Stoke Mandeville, this event is named after one of our main tour sponsors.

We had a record turn out with 22 players entering the event, including Aleksandr Prokopiev who again made the 7,000 mile trip from Yakusa, Russia. We welcomed back Darren Staddon after a 5 year absence, and welcomed 2 new players to the tour, Dave Beaumont and Chris Brown, and it would be the recently crowned English Pool 8-Ball World Wheelchair Champion Beaumont who had a fantastic first event, just missing out on the top prize.

We also again had the pleasure of the company of Big Dave Knight and his traveling Pro9 shop, many thanks to Dave for attending and also for his ongoing support for the tour. See www.pro9.co.uk for further information.

During the event all the players signed a card to be sent to tour patron Dynamite Darren Appleton and his bride to be Angie Tran, to celebrate their upcoming wedding.

PRO9 has established an outstanding reputation as Europes No.1 source for information on American Pool in the UK and Europe. Upcoming tournament details, prompt match reporting, exclusive images by talented photographers, superb articles by expert pundits, active pool related forums, player profiles and a very sophisticated membership - basically, an incredible information resource for the American style game in Europe.
Since it launched, PRO9 has become compulsory reading, not just for the UKs pool players, but to hundreds and thousands of pool obsessives from around the world every single day.
PRO9s members range from professional pool players, cue-sports enthusiasts, club managers, tournament organisers, pool fans and aficionados, as well as various "movers and shakers" in the cue-sports field, including entrepreneurs in the wholesale and retail sector, as well as magazine editors and television sports promoters.
Growing more and more popular every single year, PRO9 is the best placed vehicle for the promotion of your pool club, billiards brand, associated products, services and opportunities in the truly massive pan-European billiard market.
