Steve Mizerak Championship: Day 4

And then there was 1. Final day of the Steve Mizerak Championship and after all the chalk dust settled, it was who was crowned the new champion.

The day stared with a thrilling match between Alex Pagulayan and Donny Mills. Both players played cautious, as to not make a costly mistake that would put their opponent any advantageous position on the table. The score reached hill hill and it was Mills would send Pagulayan to a fourth place finish and a $6,000 prize.

Up next was the hot seat match between Shane Van Boening and Hunter Lombardo. Both players had been playing superbly all weekend. SVB got up 2-0 early. Lombardo tied it up at 2 games a piece. After that it was all SVB, as he didn’t let his foot off of the accelerator and took the rest of the racks to win the hot seat by a score of 8-2.

Lombardo would go on to face Mills in the third place match. This would be yet another match for the ages. Mills would go up by 2 then Lombardo tied the score and went up by 1 himself. Mills would then tied it back up and go up again. Mills would reach the hill first to Lombardo’s 6. Of course, Lombardo would tie it up hill hill and set up one final rack to advance to the finals. Mills got a bad roll after sinking the 8ball and left himself a very difficult shot on the none ball. Mills’ only option was a tough 9-10 combination in the corner pocket. The crowd held their breath as Mills lined up the shot and cheered loudly when he nailed the shot and sank the 10 ball to win and advance to the finals. Lombardo would finish in third place and claim the $9,000 prize.

A jubilant Orcullo celebrates his triumph, ending a long dry spell for the Philippines

Orcullo Delivers for the Philippines! Champion of the Predator Championship

Dennis Orcullo ended the Philippines long drought of fruitless wins when he defeated double world champion Mika Immonen in the finals of the Predator International Championship. Orcullo started the event off on bad footing when he dropped an embarrassing 9-3 loss to Japan's Yukio Akagariyama, but won 8 consecutive matches in a row to claim the 11 years ongoing Predator crown.

The day started off with the final four players. The last westerner was Mika Immonen of Finland, alongside 2 Chinese pros in Liu Haitao and Wu Jia Qing, and last Filipino standing Dennis Orcullo. Immonen and Orcullo had to defeat their Chinese counterparts in order to stop an all Chinese finals.

Mika started off his match super strong playing fast and perfect. Before long he built a 7-3 lead. But Mika then became too cavalier in his choices going more offensively and failed to protect his lead. Liu played steady with accurate potting to climb back until he took the lead at 8-7. In the final games Immonen went back to using his more knowledgeable experience to regain the lead and out defensed Liu in the final game to receive ball in hand and run out for the 10-9 thriller.

"I was playing so well and looking at the score saying to myself how did it end up being so close?!", said Immonen after the tight victory. That win was the third "hill-hill win by 1 game" win he had in the event.

Players invited to register for the Kremlin Cup 9-Ball Open

The Kremlin Cup has always been predominantly about the exacting game of Russian Pyramid - the exclusively Russian billiard game with ultra large white balls on the huge table with the toughest ball to pocket ratio of any cuesport, and it's impossible to stress enough how highly this event is regarded in Moscow, although the fact that it has been proudly called "the Wimbledon of Billiards" by one Russian pundit should give you an idea, and the first events were actually held inside the Kremlin Palace!

The Kremlin Cup was originally exclusive to invited Russian Pyramid players, but more recently the event has been opened up to international competitors, and although it's always been difficult to get results from this tournament, I do know that the 9-Ball event was won by Sandor Tot in 2005, and by Ruslan Chinakov in 2006 - and this year this televised event will feature participants from England, Holland, Germany, China, Italy, Sweden, Poland, the Philippines, Croatia and more!

Top Europeans are keeping their eyes on the prize this week

Can the European wave of wins be stopped? That will be the big question this week in Manila at The 11th Annual Predator International Championships produced by Dragon Promotions. The past two Predator Championships were both won by Filipinos (Orcullo, Reyes) but recently Europe has been dominating events in Asia and America. A world class ensemble of pro pool players will vie in singles combat September 14-18th, 2011 at the Robinson's Galleria next to the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Players from around the world will be fighting hard to win one of the longest running and prestigious titles in pool.

World Cup Champions - Team Germany - Ralf Souquet & Thorsten Hohmann

Super Germany are World Cup champs!

GERMANY became the first ever European winners of the PartyCasino.net World Cup of Pool as they made light work of shock finalists Thailand to record a superb 10-4 victory and claim the gold medals, trophy, $60,000 and more importantly the title at the SM Mall North in Manila.

Thorsten Hohmann and Ralf Souquet put in an inch perfect performance to run away with the match in sharp contrast to their semi-final game earlier in the day when they laboured to a pedestrian win over Korea.

They clearly gave themselves a good talking to between matches as they returned with the type of form that has made them two of the most feared players in the world. For Souquet it was a culmination of a magnificent seven days that saw him win the PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters last Monday and his total haul for the two events has been $50,000.

“It’s still hard to believe and it hasn’t sunk in yet. We really worked hard for the title and held ourselves together,” said a jubilant Souquet.

“We had a really hard semi-final that could’ve gone wrong and I played awful against Korea but Thorsten carried me to the final.

“I always said you can only lose as a team and we certainly won as a team. Playing here in Manila in the Philippines is the best thing that has happened to pool.”

The Thailand pair of Kobkit Palajin and Nitiwat Kanjanasri can be justifiably proud of their efforts. Surrounded in South East Asia by powerhouse pool nations like Taiwan and the Philippines, the unheralded Thais played superbly throughout the tournament.

Their semi-final showing, defeating Taiwan 9-3, was one of the best performances of the event, but the Germans were unstoppable in the final. Thailand had never got beyond the first round in previous appearances in the event but opened up with a decent win over Holland. They beat Estonia in the next round before outplaying Poland in the quarters and the two Thais receive $15,000 each for their efforts.

Team Taiwan    - Ko Pin-Yi and Ko Ping-Chun

Taiwan extinguish final Philippine hopes

IN ONE OF those matches that make pool such a compelling sport, Taiwan put paid to the final Philippines’ hopes at the PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool as the Ko brothers defeated Dennis Orcollo and Ronnie Alcano in their quarter-final match, in front of a packed house at the SM Mall North in Quezon City, Manila.

The match ebbed and flowed and went right down to a deciding rack after both teams had clawed their way back into the game from losing positions. The final villain was Ronnie Alcano but you had to feel for the 2006 World Champion as he missed the final 8 ball to hand the table back to the Taiwanese.

His partner Orcollo looked devastated and Alcano looked shell-shocked but they only had themselves to blame. Ko Pin-yi and Ko Ping-chung dropped the 8 and 9 respectively to record a fabulous win in a match they were second favourites to win at the outset.

The match started so well for Orcollo and Alcano and at 5-1 up they looked comfortable as their nation’s sole representative following the 9-1 defeat of Reyes and Bustamante by Germany earlier in the day.

The Kos though – 15 year old Ping-chun and ‘veteran’ brother Pin-yi, 22 – mounted a fight back as they took the racks, finding some excellent form. When they levelled at 5-5 the crowd was silent and before long the Ko brothers were 7-5 to the good.

They reached the hill at 8-6 which is when the drama started. A dry break allowed the Filipinos to get to the table and after some safeties were exchanged they completed a nervous run out.

Team Philippines A    - Dennis Orcollo & Ronnie Alcano

Orcollo and Alcano battle through to last 8

PHILIPPINES A – Dennis Orcollo and Ronnie Alcano, the world’s No.1 and 4 respectively –were in the fight of their lives on Friday evening at the SM Mall North as they overcame stern resistance from Canada to progress to the quarter-finals of the PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool where they will meet Taiwan.

The Canadian duo of Jason Klatt and John Morra pushed their opponents to the limit and forced them to play at their best in the closing stages. Never in front until the closing games, the Filipinos squared the match at 6-6 and then closed it out with some excellent shot-making.

‘That was a tough game and we’re just relieved to get into the next round,” beamed a delighted Orcollo.

“They pushed us all the way and there were times when I thought we might not do it. But we dug in a showed what we can do. There are now two Filipino teams in the last eight so that’s something for everyone to be proud of.”

Canada always led as neither side got to grips with the break. They went toe to toe with their opponents and kept regaining a one rack lead until they found themselves 6-4 up in the race to eight match.

That’s when the Philippines came out of their fog and stepped up to the plate. A 4/6 combo from Orcollo in the next set up a run out and a 5/9 levelled the match. The momentum was with the home side and they polished off the final two racks for the win.

The PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool features 32 two-player teams representing 31 nations – hosts Philippines have two sides. The total prize-fund is $250,000 with $60,000 going to the winning pair.
