Congratulations to Alan Coton - McDermott 9 Ball Series Grand Final Champion
Well folks, this was it! The day of the McDermott 9 Ball Series Grand Final had arrived!
And what a high quality day it was!
With plenty of pool action for all the players, including side events for anyone gracefully exiting the tournament early, play started promptly. With it being finals day, the races were longer, further rewarding the better player on the day.
It also led to some hard-fought early games. Daryl Garland and Can Ibrahim, and Bash Maqsood and Tom Emes both went hill-hill, and Luke Hart and Ryan Wissett both had good 9-7 wins against Dave Hopkin and Ashik Nathwani respectively.
Szymon Rodewald had a good win against David Hine, and Daniel Baker had probably the standout win of the early round games by sending Benji Buckley to the loser’s side, 9-5. And Shane Conroy survived a potential banana skin in Crash Bang Carter, beating him 9-6.
Into the last sixteen, Ryan Coton was in good form too, beating previous even winner Gary Bullocke 9-5. And Daniel Baker was flying, dispatching of Daryl Garland 9-1 after surviving a hill-hill scare against Bash Maqsood in the previous round.
Old friends and rivals Kev Simpson and Benji Buckley met again for the 974th time, and it went right to the wire - Kev though was to be the winner today, advancing to the quarters for a game with Luke Garland. Alan Coton also survived a hill-hill scare against David Hine, and meanwhile mini-Coton, Ryan, convincingly beat a really in-form Mathew Ross 9-1.
In the quarters, it was goodbye to the Ryans - both Coton and Wissett exited to Ashik Nathwani and Alan Coton. Luke Garland was in typical fine form and made light work of Kev Simpson - no easy feat - and Matt Hyden beat Daniel Baker by the same score - 9-3.
Both semi finals were 9-2 wins as well, with neither Ashik Nathwani or Matt Hyden managing to get past two racks, due to some seriously solid pool being played by Alan Coton and Luke Garland.
The final was a high-quality affair. The match took a few twists, with Luke looking like the early favourite. However, he stumbled a little with some uncharacteristic misses and Alan had some chances to pull clear, but missed two 9-balls as the tension ramped up.
Nevertheless Luke was starting to struggle, and Alan dug in to play some vintage pool and eventually pulled clear, getting over the line at 9-6. A well deserved victory, and a deserving champion of the season - a player who’s been at the business end of events for many years, and he now has McDermott 9-ball Series Champion on his CV. Congratulations Alan Coton!
