Players turn up the heat as action at the UK Open hots up on Day Two
Sanderson loses to Peach then advances through four consecutive one-loss-side matches to reach last 32

Day two of the 2017 UK Open saw play down to the last 16 in the Main Event and Challenge Event participants seeing their first taste of action in the two tier Challenge tournament. Amongst those expected to progress to latter stages of any competition, a host of resident GB9 players steamed through the field to advance beyond the last 32 stage.

One of those players is Elliott Sanderson. After losing out in a hill-hill battle to Daryl Peach on Friday in his first match, he battled his way through four consecutive matches to reach the last 16 stage. His first win was against GB9 newcomer Adnan Akram Bhatti, 10-3, before convincing wins against Martyn Taylor and Phil Wildman, 10-6 and 10-7 respectively. His last 32 match saw him playoff against Jamie Brennan for a place in Sunday’s last 16. Despite a great fight from Jamie, he couldn’t stop the 2017 Paul Medati Trophy runner-up from taking the match 10 racks to 6.

There was a battle of the Spaniards in the winner’s qualification round, with World Pool Masters champion David Alcaide facing World Cup of Pool playing partner Francesco Sanchez Ruiz. After going behind early on in the match, Francesco stepped through the gears to take the match 10 racks to 6. Francesco went on to face Ben George in the Last 32 match and progressed to the last 16 with a 10-5 victory. It was a different story for David though, as after qualifying through the losers qualification round with a 10-1 Victory over Tamás Vágvölgyi, he faced Karl Boyes in the last 32 match, going down 10 racks to 5.

There was, however, a shock exit for UK ranked number 1 Craig Osborne on Saturday afternoon. After his 10-6 defeat at the hands of Steward Colclough on Friday, Craig had battled his way through the losers bracket, beating Fi Radomski and Lee Creighton on the way to a losers qualification match with Dave Nelson. However it was Dave who produced the better during the match, playing his way through to the last 32 with a 10-7 victory over Craig. Craig will now participate in the Challenge Division event throughout Sunday.

Play continues with the Challenge Division last 16 matches at 9am on Sunday morning, the last 16 of the main event resuming at 10:30. You can see live action on the live stream at http://www.gb9balltour.com/livestream, with the final expected to kick off at 17:00, follow the live scoring service at http://www.gb9balltour.com/livescoring/ts/tables.htm or see the full draw at http://www.gb9balltour.com/livescoring/documents/UKOpenGrid.pdf

The 2017 UK Open offers a guaranteed prize fund of £11,500, with Mosconi Cup ranking points on offer for all players reaching the single elimination stages.

In 2017 GB9 is proudly sponsored by Rasson Billiards, Simonis Cloth, Aramith Billiard Balls, McDermott Cues and Carlson Rezidor Hotels making the perfect combination of the very best equipment in the most outstanding venues.
