The 73rd World 14.1 Tournament Steinway Billiards 3525 Steinway St Astoria New York USA www.worldstraightpool.com - latest brackets pdf www.steinwaybilliards.com www.insidepool.tv - live streaming video www.nycgrind.com
Monday-Saturday 19-24 August 2013
Darren Appleton Photograph courtesy of ©Charles Eames UK's Darren Appleton has shattered all previous high runs in any major 14.1 event in the history of the sport
Darren Appleton of the United Kingdom has done something no player has done in the 102 years of pocket billiards championships. Appleton on his first opening offensive inning ran a perfect 200 point game. This put him in the record books with a 200 to 1 score over Filipino world champ Francisco Bustamante. Dragon Promotions and Dr. Michael Fedak have brought another globally star studded field at this year's 73rd Olhausen World Tournament hosted by Steinway Billiards in New York on August 19th-24th,2013. Live stream broadcast will be on www.insidepool.tv
Bustamante made his first offensive attempt on a long distance ball but was then stuck with no easy shot next. He went for a tough combo and missed leaving the rack open for Appleton. Francisco would never leave his seat again. For the next 1 hour and 40 minutes Appleton ran rack after rack in precision. Eventually he broke the World Tournament record of 73 events with a 175 which was previously held by Thorsten Hohmann. And then he broke the all time record at any major at 183 which was set at a old US Open 14.1 by Joe Procita. As the audience cheered and the pressure mounted ball by ball, the steely nerved Appleton never slowed down. He eventually hit the final breakshot and made 2 more balls to make a perfect 2 century run and win the match at 200 points which he left the table unfinished without a miss.
"I've been telling my friends for days now that after watching Appleton play many matches, he really plays the right way. He plays great patterns and comes with the tough shots when he has to as well", commented John Schmidt, 2012 World Tournament 14.1 Champion.
Appleton was all smiles when he broke record after record.
"I really didn't know what the record was until they announced it during the run. I was just wanting to get to 170. But I was pretty happy when I heard I broke the World Tournament record. It feels really good", said Appleton.
When asked when did he feel he could get the 200 balls Darren answered,"When I ran 80 I felt that I could do it because I felt really good the way I was hitting the balls." Appleton actually ran a 150 unfinished in practice before the match today in warm-ups.
When asked what has motivated him so much during the run he answered," My fiance Angie reminded me we have a big wedding bill to pay soon!" he laughs.
"I would have continued my run if we had 2-3 hours before the finals." Appleton left his run unfinished and Bustamante humorously swiped all the balls after his run in any case.

Hohmann Wins Showdown with Reigning Champ Schmidt
Thorsten Hohmann Photograph courtesy of ©Charles Eames Schmidt versus Hohmann was highly anticipated but anticlimatic
Schmidt becomes the least American standing once again. Hohmann the last German standing. The semi-finals could have been set as a finals match in any other year. The two titans of 14.1 faced off for the right to play one match for the title once again. The stars are inching closer to the oldest title in the world. Dragon Promotions and Dr. Michael Fedak have brought another globally star studded field at this year's 73rd Olhausen World Tournament hosted by Steinway Billiards in New York on August 19th-24th,2013. Live stream broadcast will be on www.insidepool.tv
USA's John Schmidt had defeated nearly all the favorite American players including Archer, Hatch, and Van Boening who all fell to Schmidt. Hohmann started the event a little slow and escaped Max Eberle and then proceeded to annihilate Jayson Shaw of Scotland.
The semi-finals was highly anticipated as the fans quickly filled all the seats in the 11am session. Schmidt came with a great opening shot but then missed the next ball. Hohmann ran a 70 and played safe and then another 30 and quickly accumulated a 100 ball lead. This would prove to be insurmountable as Schmidt could only manage a rack and eventually fell to Hohmann who had run his 200 balls in a handful of innings to win 200 to 18.
"Sometimes you run 200 and then sometimes you run 20. That's straight pool", laughed Schmidt in very good nature. Schmidt had defeated Hohmann in last year's quarter finals.
"I feel great. Never tired yet. I'm disappointed I haven't run 200 yet", said a very confident and obviously in stroke Hohmann.
If Hohmann wins in the finals, he will be the first player to win the event 3 times in this century.
Schmidt and Hohmann Collision Course to the Semi-Finals
Dennis Hatch and Oliver Ortmann Photograph courtesy of ©Charles Eames Hatch Downs Ortmann
The Olhausen World Tournament of 14.1 is down to the final 6 players. Two Americans, three Europeans, and one Asian remain. The battle for the mantle of the greatest straight pool player in the world is now in the final single elimination stage races to 200.
In a thrilling final 16 match, USA's Hatch took on 2x World 14.1 Champ Oliver Ortmann and jumped to a good lead. Needing only 3 balls for the win, Hatch made the break shot but was left with a tough 1ball which he missed. Ortmann needed a big run and managed 40 balls before missing and Hatch won with a sizable margin. Ortmann received a standing ovation for his attendance and induction as this year's 14.1 Hall of Fame inductee.
"I only needed 3 balls so I should have hit that break shot way softer", said Hatch afterwards.
Max Eberle of the USA gave Thorsten Hohmann all he could handle as he took a 80 ball lead early on. Hohmann answered back with a 100 ball run. Eberle would take the lead once more but a missed shot cost him and Hohmann won the hard fought battle 200 to 163.
Charlie Williams was the only other undefeated American player left and took an early lead of 70 balls over Jayson Shaw of Scotland. Missed opportunities by Williams led Shaw back into the game and Shaw went onto win 200 to 165. This setup Shaw vs Hohmann, but Shaw was no match and lost to Hohmann 200 to 20 points.
"The fatigue level is a huge factor when you have to shoot in over 1000 balls in the first few days. That's why you have to really tip your hat to these World Champions of 14.1. They make these huge runs all the way till the end of the tournament", said Williams, producer of the World Tournament 14.1.
John Schmidt easily took apart USA #1 Shane Van Boening in a blowout match with over a 150 point lead. Schmidt had run a 100 or near it in 5 consecutive matches and is on fire as he was in 2012.
The Schmidt and Hatch quarter finals will decide which American will represent the USA on the final day tomorrow. The winner gets Hohmann which will be an epic match.
4 World 14.1 Champions Chasing Another World Tournament Title
Schmidt looking to be the first man to repeat in 30 years Photograph courtesy of ©Brian Leong Cohen, Hohmann, and Ortmann going for their 2nd and 3rd World 14.1s
The event started with four past World Tournament 14.1 champions entered into the event. After 650-800 balls made and 6-8 match battles, all four of the four have made it to the final stage of the championship. This year's Olhausen World Tournament of 14.1 has seen the 48 invited players narrowed down to 16 and now battling in the final single elimination stage races to 200.
USA's John Schmidt still looks like the best bet to win the title again which would make him the first man this century to do so in a repeat. Schmidt has run a century plus several 90 and 80 ball runs each of his last 4 matches. He defeated Johnny Archer and NYC's Michael Yednak yesterday to advance.
France's Stephan Cohen took a surprise loss to USA's Danny Barouty but then bounced back and eliminated USA's Tony Robles.
Germany's Thorsten Hohmann defeated Philippines Jose Parica 150-90 and then crushed Scotland's Jonni Fulcher 150 to 38.
Finally Germany's Oliver Ortmann had a very long day with a 150-69 win over fellow German Ralph Eckert, and then took a 150-98 loss to England's Darren Appleton. Ortmann bounced back with a 150 to 56 win over USA's Mike Davis.
Interestingly, all four past World Tournament 14.1 Champions have taken a loss in the event this year. Which shows the level of competition in 14.1 has risen greatly in the past few years since the 2006 revival.
UK's Appleton #1 Seed into Second Stage of the World Tournament 14.1
Darren Appleton Photograph courtesy of ©John Sturgis Hatch Takes #2 Seed for USA
England's Darren Appleton has gone undefeated and overall best record to win the #1 seed berth into the second stage of the Olhausen World Tournament 14.1. USA's Dennis Hatch has also gone undefeated to take the #2 seed and the top 8 overall seems balanced between Europe, Asia, and the USA. This year's World Tournament of 14.1 has seen the 48 invited players narrowed down to 24 and now battling in the double elimination stage races to 150. The remaining half of the field are inching closer to the oldest title in the world. Dragon Promotions and Dr. Michael Fedak have brought another globally star studded field at this year's 73rd Olhausen World Tournament hosted by Steinway Billiards in New York on August 19th-24th,2013. Live stream broadcast will be on www.insidepool.tv
Appleton won his Group #5 which included his undefeated run over former Silver and Bronze finishers Mike Davis, Max Eberle. He has made 500 balls and held his 5 opponents to only 114 balls. Hatch has also made 500 balls and held his opponents to 137 balls, and was only edged out by Appleton by 23 balls. Hatch had perhaps the toughest group of the event with the likes of Johnny Archer, Jayson Shaw, and Robb Saez in his group. Saez did not qualify and Archer miraculously made it through with only 2 wins and 3 losses.
Other undefeated players with 5 and 0 records includes Finland's Mika Immonen #3 seed, Scotland's Jonni Fulcher #4 seed, China's Wang Can #5 seed, USA's Charlie WIlliams #6 ieed. USA's Corey Deuel and Philipines Warren Kiamco both have one loss but took the #7 and #8 seeds.
Dennis Hatch & Wang Can Rule Day 2 of Olhausen World Tournament 14.1
Dennis Hatch Photograph courtesy of ©Charles Eames Dennis Hatch & Wang Can Rule Day 2
One of USA's top guns Dennis Hatch and rising Asian star Wang Can have gone undefeated in all their respective 5 round robin matches. This year's World Tournament of 14.1 has all 48 players battling in the round robin stage inching closer to the oldest title in the world. Dragon Promotions and Dr. Michael Fedak have brought another globally star studded field at this year's 73rd Olhausen World Tournament hosted by Steinway Billiards in New York on August 19th-24th,2013. Live stream broadcast will be on www.insidepool.tv
Dennis Hatch has been a freight train and demolished Johnny Archer, Charles Eames, Holden Chin, Robb Saez, and Scotland's Jayson Shaw. He has won his Group #6 and will be one of the top 8 seeds in the next stage of the event in which he also earns one of the 8 available byes.
"I grew up playing straight pool as a kid. Jimmy Mataya was one of my early influences and we played straight pool. So the World Tournament 14.1 is like going back to my roots", explained Hatch.
China's Wang Can has just learned 14.1 on this trip to America, and his straight shooting pool skills has not faltered him in learning fast. Wang has beaten NYC local legend Danny Barouty, Craig Houghton of GA, Jim Gottier, and squeaked by qualifier winner Dennis Spears 100-97. Then he had his biggest 14.1 win as of yet when he took down Oliver Ortmann 100 to 61 in his final match. Wang Can will now be seeded in the top 8 for the final 24 field cut.
Shane Van Boening First Match a 100 Perfect
An omen? Van Boening wins his first ever 14.1 match with a perfect 100 ball run. Photograph courtesy of ©John Sturgis Immonen & Appleton Stellar
Shane Van Boening gave USA a nice lift as he played his first ever 14.1 match at the World Tournament. After winning the lag, Shane made a perfect 100 run. Day 1 some some stellar straight pool as players inch closer to the World Tournament Champion title. The Olhausen World Tournament of 14.1 kicked off August 19th with all 48 players battling in the round robin stage. Dragon Promotions and Dr. Michael Fedak have brought another globally star studded field at this year's 73rd Olhausen World Tournament hosted by Steinway Billiards in New York on August 19th-24th,2013. Live stream broadcast will be on www.insidepool.tv
Shane's victim was local qualifier Bill Sudia who never got a chance. Van Boening won 100 to 0 and then won his next match 100 to 58 over Blair Levandowski. Van Boening will be tested tonight against last year's Bronze medalist Ralph Eckert of Germany.
The best performance on the TV table thus far has been from England's Darren Appleton who ran 97 and out against USA' s Mike Davis.
Mika Immonen of Finland has been finding his stride with a 100 ball run against Shaun Wilkie from the break to win 100 to 0 and then he defeated Filipino champion Francisco Bustamante 100 to 76. He then puit another dagger in with a 87 ball run today over Kevin Clark to win 100 to 10. The Ice Man looks like he will be a tough contender this year once again.
Today's marquee TV table lineup includes:
