Hall of Famer Ralf Souquet (GER) Foto: EPBF/AMM Hall of Famer through to next round
Thursday, 18 October 2012: Ralf Souquet (GER) won his first match over Jani Siekkinen (FIN) by a hair’s breadth with 9:8.
Hall of famer Souquet was the mile high favourite to win this match. But sometimes, things just don’t happen your way. Souquet missed an easy shot in his first rack and had to watch Siekkinen drawing first blood. Then, the balls just did not roll Souquet’s way. Siekkinen scored point after point and after six racks he had an unbelievable 6:0 lead over Souquet. But knowing Souquet, one thing is for sure: he never gives up! So it happened this time.
Souquet suddenly seemed to get momentum and forced the tide to turn in his favour. He scored point after point and managed to tie the match hill-hill at 8:8. What a drama! In the final rack, Souquet proved to be the player with the better nerves and ran the rack, seizing the match with 9:8 off Siekkinen.

Other notable results include Mehmet Bakici (TUR) winning with 9:6 over Thomas Poeschl (GER). Imran Majid (GBR) sent Pascal Budo (BEL) to the loser’s side with an impressive 9:3 victory. Helmut Heck (GER) delivered one of the surprises for today. In an intense match he defeated Mario He (AUT) with 9:5.

Petroni had Mehmetcik on toast
Fabio Petroni (ITA) on a mission against Mehmetcik Foto: EPBF/AMM Tough lesson for local hero
Thursday, 18 October 2012: In a one-sided match, long-time Euro-Tour regular Fabio Petroni (ITA) defeated local hero Berk Mehmetcik (TNC) with 9:2.
And the victory could have been even clearer. Mehmetcik was pushed to his limits. Having had in mind Mehmetcik’s latest performance at the Euro-Tour, everyone expected a tight match between the two contestants. Having Petroni, the experienced guy on the one side and Mehmetcik, the young and hungry newcomer on the other side, was a promising matchup. But Mehmetcik could not tie in with his latest performance.
Petroni played rock solid and left only few chances to Mehmetcik. But when he got them, the player from North Cyprus could not make anything out of it. No wonder, the score was 7:0 to Petroni after 7 racks.
Then, in the 8th rack, Mehmetcik broke the rack and the 1-ball went in. He pocketed the 2-ball and missed a makeable 3-ball. Petroni continued on his quest for glory and pocketed all balls until he came to the 8-ball. He missed it by a mile and left a present for Mehmetcik on the table who opened his account with it, making the score 7:1. Mehmetcik managed to win another rack but that was it for him in this match. Petroni demonstrated his dominance and won the next two racks, winning the match with 9:2. Hopefully, Mehmetcik will be able to perform better in his next match(es) on the loser’s side.
Other notable results include Ivo Aarts (NED) handing a doughnut to Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS) defeating him 9:0. Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) won her second match 9:4 over Saki Kanatlar TUR). In a match between the two British players Chris Melling and Phil Burford, Melling just made it with 9:8. Oliver Ortmann (GER) had some problems with Even Waernes (NOR) but in the end won his match with 9:6
Ups and Downs in North Cyprus
Obviously not happy with his performance: Phil Burford (GBR) Foto: EPBF/AMM Burford prevailed over Prager
Thursday, 18 October 2012: In a match with a lot of ups and downs, Phil Burford (GBR) prevailed over Christian Prager (GER) with 9:6.
It was amazing to watch the match. It seemed as if the match was divided into three periods. It started with both contestants playing quite strong.
Burford opened his account with a run out to gain a 1:0 lead. Prager, who became third in the 8-ball tournament yesterday, answered that right away and ran the next rack with his own break, tying the match at 1:1. The next two racks were taken by Burford. Prager missed some tough shots and Burford capitalized from that. After four racks, the score was 3:1 in favour of Burford who was definitely the favourite in the match. At that point in time, period one seemed to end and phase two started.
The second period was determined by many errors that were really uncharacteristic for both players. Even easy shots were missed and safeties rarely turned out to be safe after their execution. It seemed as if two different players came to the table. In the 9th rack, the score was 4:4 and Phil Burford’s break was coming up. He left an open table for Prager. The German pocketed all balls until he had a straight position for the 6-ball. He pocketed the 6-ball and got another tough lay for the 7-ball. He also solved that problem by playing a great shot and pocketing the 7-ball. Then he missed an 8-ball that was by far easier than the two shots before. He left no position for Burford who tried to pocket the 8-ball over one rail, but he failed. Prager then missed the 8-ball again (!) and Burford ran the remaining two balls to take a 5:4 lead. The next two racks were also determined by mistakes and missed shots and the score went to 6:5 for Burford.
That was the point in time when phase 2 ended and phase 3 started.
Both players started to play better again but it was Burford who made the more spectacular and better shots. Prager simply couldn’t keep up with him and in the end, Burford seized the match 9:6 and deserved the victory. Prager will get another chance in the loser’s bracket.
Other notable results from this morning include the only female participant, Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) winning over Valery Kuloyants (GER) with 9:4. The seeded players will join the field in the next round.
